Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Naaman,
My name is Tessa Moorhead, and I am entering my fourth year at Queen’s University, majoring in Sociology with a minor in Employment Relations. I am writing to request approval to take 15.0 units while studying abroad at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) during the Fall 2026 semester through the International Letter of Permission (ILOP).
I have carefully planned and researched the courses offered at UAB to complement and enrich my degree. I have thoroughly reviewed my remaining degree requirements and have already started the transfer-credit approval process with the relevant departments at Queen’s. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity while continuing to move forward academically, and taking a full course load abroad would enable me to do that.
I understand the standard limit is 6.0 units, but I am confident I can manage the increased workload successfully. I am currently in strong academic standing with a 3.5 GPA. I have worked hard throughout my time at Queen’s to stay organized and dedicated to my academics.
The five courses I am interested in taking at UAB are:
- Intercultural Communication
- People Management
- The Creative Economy
- Urban Interventions, Graffiti & Public Sculpture
- Politics of the Developing World
I have already worked through the transfer process for these courses with the appropriate undergraduate department chairs at Queen’s. Intercultural Communication has been confirmed as SOCY 3UNS, People Management has been approved as EMPR 3UNS, and The Creative Economy has been confirmed as a match for ENIN 240. I plan to use the two remaining courses toward my elective requirements, and I am still confirming their final unit conversion.
I chose these courses intentionally because they fit my degree requirements and also build on the areas I want to keep developing at Queen’s. Intercultural Communication and Politics of the Developing World align with my Sociology studies through their focus on culture, identity, inequality, globalization, and comparative social analysis. People Management aligns well with my Employment Relations minor, as it focuses on labour relations, recruitment, training, performance management, and workplace culture. The Creative Economy adds another perspective through creativity, innovation, and economic life, while Urban Interventions, Graffiti & Public Sculpture connects to my interest in public space, visual culture, and the social life of the city.
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona offers a solid combination of courses that fit my remaining Sociology, Employment Relations, and elective requirements while also giving me access to internationally focused and place-based study that I could not replicate through a regular semester at Queen’s. It would provide a deeper understanding and application of the concepts in a new environment and culture. This experience would also broaden my global perspective and help me build a more diverse network.
Approving this petition would allow me to complete a full semester abroad in a way that supports my degree plan, keep me on track for graduation, and make this opportunity more meaningful academically.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I have registered for additional summer courses to give myself flexibility for my final academic year. As such, by the end of this summer, I will have completed 93.0 units toward my degree, leaving 27.0 units remaining: 12.0 Sociology units, 9.0 Employment Relations units, and 6.0 elective units. If I were limited to 6.0 units abroad, I would not be able to make enough progress toward those remaining requirements to graduate in April 2027. Taking 15.0 units at UAB would allow me to maximize my time abroad academically and return to Queen’s in a strong position for my final term. Upon returning to Queen’s, my final semester would then consist of 9.0 Sociology units and 6.0 Employment Relations units.
