Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: During this past Winter 2026 Semester, I was going through a few mental health struggles that impeded my ability to write two final exams in April, and after speaking with a counsellor at student wellness as well as reaching out to my professors, my exams were pushed back to the deferral period in May. After arriving home, I was able to work past these issues and planned on preparing for the deferred exams, but unfortunately, the date for an urgent surgery I had scheduled for mid-June was pushed up to the 28th of April. To make matters worse, I had some postoperative complications that brought me to the ER and had me admitted for a little over a week. I was just discharged on Monday and have been back home with family, but the recovery process is going to be long and complex. I will be receiving daily wound care at home from a specialist for at least the next month, and then hopefully will begin attending a clinic for extended care.

Given the severity of my postoperative condition, I am not able to sit down normally (on a chair or lie on my backside) and experience pain and discomfort regularly, as well as constant fatigue. I don't feel as though I am able to effectively study for these finals exams, one of which I need to perform well on in order to graduate in December as I had planned.

I have reached out to the professors of both courses, explaining my situation and my concern for not being able to travel to Kingston and much less sit down for the deferred exams next week. They both graciously agreed to organize alternative arrangements.
