Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Queen’s University,
I am writing today to request to waive a petition deadline for dropping courses.

I began my education at Queen’s University in the fall of 2018. I was surprised with the results of my first couple years, as I maintained an above average academic record throughout high school. I tried to deal with my performance in silence, and it wasn’t until I was put on academic probation in May of 2022 that I took steps to understand what was going on. It was then that I began speaking to a therapist to better deal with the root issues and upon her advice I was tested for ADHD. In 2023, I was assessed and officially diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In the following months I began proper treatment with medication Vyvanse, although I had to increase dosages after a trail period. It was also at this time that I applied for a petition to drop courses after the deadline, citing my recent ADHD diagnosis.

In fall of 2023 I returned to my studies. Unfortunately, my anxiety drastically worsened during this time, which I later learned was a side effect of the Vyvanse as well as the general stresses of academia. After consulting my family doctor, I was diagnosed with depression, and I began taking the SSRI Sertraline in late 2025.

This past academic year I reduced my course load hoping that I would be able to improve my performance. Unfortunately, my depressive symptoms increased, resulting in me consulting with my family doctor once more to remedy the situation. We believe we have now secured the correct medication and coping tools to be successful with my academic career.

In May of this year, I was made aware of my current standing with Queen’s and spoke to PASS advisor Kerri Andrews whereby I was informed about the process to waive a petition deadline. I am writing this petition on Kerri’s advice to request my past poor performances be waived in order to raise my GPA to an acceptable standard. I am sorry I was not aware of this procedure, had I known, I would have petitioned the Queen’s administration much sooner.

Despite my struggles and current academic standing, I have greatly enjoyed my experience with Queen’s University and do sincerely wish to return to my studies so that I may graduate in May 2027.

Thank you for your time and understanding,
-Riley Lindsay
