Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Ms. Blake,

I am a first year student appealing to drop ECON 111 (Fall, 2015). With the overwhelming academic and social transition to university, I have not been able to perform well in the course and I do not feel the course is beneficial to my future development. I am currently enrolled in ECON 111 (Fall, 2015) and ECON 112 (Winter, 2015) because ECON 110 did not work with my schedule when I was signing up for courses. I intend to drop both ECON courses. With the high stress levels of adjusting to the new academic and social situations during this semester, I have reached the conclusion that the best solution would be to drop ECON 111.

As a first year, during this semester I have struggled a lot more than I thought I would both academically and socially. It has been difficult for me to leave my entire support structure behind, create a new social network and deal with being away from home. My academic transition has been even more difficult. The workload at university is significantly more involved than my high school workload. I have been trying to adjust, but I have had a lot of trouble with my ECON course compared to any other course. I find myself overwhelmed, stressed out and unhappy with my performance with every ECON assignment and quiz. I have not been able to understand readings, comprehend lectures or complete the assignments well. I cannot balance my social and academic life because of how much work I have to do. The workload from ECON has been unbearable for me and has caused an incredible amount of frustration. Too often, I get upset about how I am doing in the course. Recently, I realized that my stress levels have become a lot worse. I am appealing at this point in the term because I realize I can no longer handle it. I thought that I could push myself and get through the course but I realize that is not possible. At this point, I feel I have no other choice but to drop the course.

If I were to drop ECON 111 (Fall, 2015), I would be able to adjust better to university life here at Queen's. I would not have the constant stress of thinking about how horribly I am doing in the course and would instead be able to put that energy towards the rest of my courses. Dropping ECON would help my mental state in that I would be able to find a healthier balance socially, academically and emotionally. In the future, I do not plan on taking any economics courses during my time here at Queen's. I plan to major in Global Development and minor in Spanish. My main focus will be cultures and civilization, including languages and anthropological studies.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Meryl Goeke
