Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am submitting this application to appeal my 203 Music history grade be changed to a Credit Standing.
As a student with a disability, registered with disability services, I have accommodations to receive notes taken by a note taker. However, I did not receive this during my first year of study at Queen's. This greatly impacted my mark in my first year with this history class in particular. When I went to disability services and asked whether I could receive a note taker for this class, I was told that I couldn't because there was an outline provided to students. Not having notes for this class made the final exam very challenging because I was only relying on the notes I had taken in the textbook, even though I was present during lectures. I do not feel that this mark is reflective of me as a student or the effort I put forth in the class.
I have struggled to receive notes for many of my classes, Disability services gave me notes for one of my first year classes in second year after I had completed the course. At this point, I now am able to take better notes and have a great support system of peers who I have communicated with to provide me with notes for classes that I need them. I went into disability services in the second week of school this year and they said to come back in a couple weeks to get a note taker sorted out, but at that point I was already a third of the way through the semester and needed notes to start studying and working on papers and could not afford the gap in receiving the notes.
Thank you for your consideration,
Melissa Huttmann
