Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am appealing to drop course FILM 240 (Fall 2015).

My final assignment in this course was given a final grade of F. There was no explanation in the Grade Book online, thus I approached the Professor of the course for feedback as to the rationale for the failing grade. The answer I received was due to my assignment only integrated 8 out of the 10 sources (combination of course and outside research materials), the assignment is deemed a failure.

When I asked her for further clarity, she advised that the assignment asked for a minimum of 10 source material. However, the instructions for the assignment indicate a minimum of 5 in course and 5 supplemental materials, but this is not a factor in the assessment criteria. To fail me based on only missing 2 additional resources is a bit harsh. With this grade, I will not be able to pass her course.

I then tried to compromise with the Professor who advised me that to be fair to all students she can not allow for me to rectify the situation by adding the missing sources. As I submitted online 2 days prior to the deadline on the public forum, I indicated that this had been a way for students to get feedback from a TA or a professor, and in which case I received nothing, which has also left me at a loss as to how she deems this fair. To be fair, I had hoped someone would have noted this for me. She then advised that I should have asked for such, which was not how the forums for other assignments had worked online. As well, I noticed and advised the Professor that she only seemed to reply to the same students, making the concept of fair moot.

When I asked her what my options at this point were, she advised me to pass the final exam and do some of the bonus assignments (ranging from 1 to 2 additional points). The bonus assignments will not provide me with enough points to pass the course and I do not do well on exams that are strictly Multiple Choice, time pressured and based on arbitrary facts no one can remember, rather than course materials. She then provided me with the only other option which was to submit an Appeal to drop the course late, to which she stated she would support. I then requested her support in a written statement to this effect, to which she provided and can be found in the record email surrounding this situation.

At this point, I have failed her course. As I wish to not have my academic record effected by this failing grade, and as there is no compromise to be found, I am appealing to drop the course late.

To support my appeal, I will be submitting the following documentation:

1) Course Outline
2) Infographic Assignment
3) Emails - record of our communication and the Professor's written statement to support my appeal to drop the course late.

Thank you for your consideration of my appeal application.
