Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies):

I am appealing for credit standing in CHEM 282, a distance studies course taken in the Summer 2015 term.

During May 2015, shortly before the CHEM 282 summer course began, a childhood friend and long time teammate of mine passed away in a highway car accident, along with her best friend, who was also a member of my peer group growing up. The impact this tragedy had on myself, my hometown, and two high school communities, was enormous. The sudden loss of two young people, one of which I considered a close childhood friend, put me into a state of grief for many months. Feeling as though I could keep the emotional turmoil of the incident from affecting my studies, I continued to partake in the summer course I was enrolled in. However, I found it extremely hard to focus on the course during the months after the accident. I became very anxious and the grief significantly interfered with my ability to concentrate on my studies. I feel that the emotional and cognitive effects that this loss had on me prevented me from performing academically to the best of my abilities. It was very hard, and at times impossible, to put aside thoughts of the accident so as to focus on my studies, which further contributed to my distress. I found it especially difficult to dismiss my feelings of grief while studying for and writing the final exam, and I felt that the increased anxiety I experienced interfered with my ability to process the course material, and thus to fully excel to the best of my abilities in the course.

This loss affected me for the entirety of the summer and has continued to these first few months of the semester. Although I tried my best to set these emotions aside when studying, I needed to allow myself to grieve, and to acknowledge what happened. Now, at this time in the current semester, I feel I have come to terms with the deaths of two friends, and have returned to a place where I feel I can perform academically to the best of my ability. I no longer feel as though it is affecting my academic performance and I am again able to work towards my academic goals.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my request.

Sincerely,
Hannah Brooks
