Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to drop a course after the academic deadline due to extenuating circumstances that had caused me to miss a lot of the course material. The course that I am appealing to drop is CHEM 313(Quantum Mechanics.
4 weeks into the semester I was forced to travel back to Saudi Arabia due to a direct family emergency. My father was admitted to the internal care unit in the hospital due to a brain hemorrhage, and is currently in a coma. I was in Saudi Arabia for almost 5 weeks until my mother asked me to go back and continue my studies. During my leave I had missed a lot of the midterms, quizzes, assignments from all of my courses some of which I was able to makeup. For this course I had missed two quizzes, one assignment, and a midterm due to my leave and I was unable to makeup any of them so my fate in the course would rely solely on my final exam which would be weighted at 90 of my grade. I have been able to catch up with most of my other courses since I was able to make up almost all of the midterms and assignments, but for this course I am in a very vulnerable position given that it is my toughest course and there was almost no way to make up the coursework and pass the exam. I have tried to find tutors for this course but I couldn¿¿t, and I have even tried to work alongside some of my other classmates to catch up but I was unable to grasp such in-depth material this late in the course. I am sending this appeal in order to drop the course because I had to speak to my Professor who is very insistent and supportive of me dropping the course given my situation. These past several weeks have been some of the toughest weeks on myself and my family, and given how distant they are and the time zone difference my communication with them had caused me great issues. Along with the all my courses this semester I have been under a tremendous amount of stress and it has been very hard for me to catch up with all my courses, but I managed to keep up with all my other courses.
Since this course is a required fall course for my major, I plan to retake the course in the fall of next year along with some of my 4th year courses, and still be able to graduate as planned next year.

New Information: Hello,
I have sent out an appeal concerning my extenuating circumstances to drop a course after the deadline. In my appeal letter I wrote that I was away Saudi Arabia for about 5 weeks, but that was mistake since I was in Saudi Arabia for almost 3 weeks, and in New York for a week and a half so even though I was still away for a total of 5 weeks which was what I meant to say, I didn¿¿t spend the entire 5 weeks in Saudi Arabia.
