Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies),
My name is Abigail Shannon, and I am a third year Concurrent Education student at Queen¿¿s University. I am appealing for Aegrotat standing in ENGL 238, and for either extension of incomplete grade, or to drop PHIL 361. I received a severe concussion on October 24th, 2015, and am still experiencing full concussion symptoms. Because of this, I have been unable to attend classes or keep up with readings. I have met with my professors in all of my courses, and discussed the various options I had moving forward. Success in my education is very important to me, and I want to do well in all of my courses. Professor Slipp (ENGL 238) suggested I appeal for Aegrotat standing for her course, and concentrate on finishing my final essay so that 60 of the course is graded. Because I have fallen so far behind in the material and am still unable to retain information due to my injury, I am not able to successfully attempt the exam.
In PHIL 361, the entire grade of the course is split between the midterm and the final. Because of my injury, I was unable to write the midterm, and could not attend class to learn any of the material following the midterm. There is no textbook or out of class source of information for this course, so all of what I need to learn is based off of the lectures I was unable to attend. I really enjoyed the material of this course, and would be happy to retake it online or if it was offered in second semester, however it is available as neither of these. If there is any possible alternative to dropping this course, I would love to look at that option, as I do not want to fall behind in the number of courses I have taken.
I have made arrangements in two of my other courses (PSYC 235 and PHIL 347) with my professors, so I do not need to appeal anything in either of those. PSYC 235 is a full year course, so my instructor agreed to change the weight of the assignments in the winter term to accommodate my needs. PHIL 347 does not have an exam, and my instructor agreed to push back the deadlines for the final two assignments to accommodate my needs. The only other course I am taking this semester is LAW 201, and because it is a blended learning course, I have been able to listen to the online lectures and retain enough information to keep up with the content more than I have for my other courses. Because of this, I am going to attempt the exam as it is scheduled.
My future plan for academic success is to rest and recover over the break, so that I can be back to good health for next semester. If my appeal to drop PHIL 361 is granted, I would like to re-take it the next time it is offered as a course. I have an appointment to meet with the concussion specialist in the first week of the winter term for a new assessment, and if I am not recovered, I might need to consider taking a lighter course load next semester. Once I have a more clear idea pertaining to my condition, I plan to meet with an academic advisor to help me plan out my courses, and stay on the track to academic success.
Thank you for your consideration,
Abigail Shannon

Amendment to Appeal 1658
Relevant Petition: 1658
New Information: When beginning the appeal process, I believed it would be possible for me to complete my PHIL 347 course regardless of my concussion. However, I have spent several days attempting to work on the papers and have been unable to do so. My symptoms remain severe, and I am unable to retain information or concentrate. This is hindering my ability to be successful in the course, and because of this, I would like to appeal to drop this course. I wish to re-take this course in the future when I am recovered, but because I am unable to currently, it would be in my best academic interest to drop it.
