Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear J. Hugh Horton and Johanne Bénard,
I am a fourth year Economics major, and I am writing to you to appeal to waive the requirements to withdraw.
I have carefully studied the regulation and instructions from your letter and I feel that I was unable to perform my best during the past academic year by extenuating circumstances beyond my control. I was informed in the winter term that my grandmother is in serious illness which turned my entire life upside down. Therefore, I am requesting to waive the requirements to withdraw.
My grandmother is diagnosed with a pancreatic cancer. I was and still am very close to her and we do not know how much time we have with her. The doctor said that she may be around for weeks or months. When I was young, my grandmother and grandfather practically raised me and my sister for 5 years as both of my parents were working full-time. I was devastated when I heard the news and I did not know what to do or how to react. I was disturbed and stressed ever since I heard the news because I did not know if I will ever get to see her before she passes. My grandmother was all I could think of everyday and I had a hard time focusing on my daily activities.
In the beginning of February, my parents went back to Korea, as soon as they heard the news, to take care of her. The hospital sent her home in the beginning of April since they could not do anything for her. As my grandmother¿¿s situation was not stable, my sister also went to visit her in April, during my exam period in specific. I left to Korea right after my exams were done and stayed for a month. When I arrived in Korea in early May, she could not walk or even pull up herself to sit. She needs help with using the bathrooms and wears diapers. My mother and my aunt has been staying with my grandmother ever since she was sent back home.
The reason why I did not stay in Korea any longer was because I am aware of my academic situation and I am taking a correspondence course for the summer in order to recover my GPA. I feel like I made a right choice to come back even though I feel terribly guilty of the decision I made for my future and not spending it with the person who helped me to be who I am today. I am grateful that I did get to see her and spend some quality time with her.
In the fall term of 2013, I kept my GPA well above 1.6. This proves that I can handle my study with my part time job. However, I could not concentrate on my study after I heard about my grandmother and how urgent the situation was. I felt miserable because for the past 4 years I did not get to go back and visit my grandmother in Korea.
So much have happened during the winter semester and I would ask you to grant me an opportunity to study another year at Queen¿¿s and perform my best. Feel free to contact me with any questions at 9kho@queensu.ca. I appreciate the time that you have taken to read my appeal.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I am desperate and asking you to give me another chance and I am certain that I am able to recover my GPA above 1.6 after the fall 2014 term.
I am sure I can recover my GPA once I finish the summer course and re-take courses that I took in winter 2014 semester such as ECON 310 and ECON361 in this coming year, along with ECON 240, ECON241, ECON331, and some four hundred level courses. Also, I would like to take JAPN 100 as my elective course since I still need some elective credits for me to graduate.
Since the schedule for next academic year is not available yet, I am unsure what I will take for each semester. However, these courses are what I would want to take in the upcoming year.
