Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Ms. Bérnard
I am a second year student here at Queen¿¿s and while I have had a hard time these past few terms, I have finally found the strength and confidence to improve my situation and I¿¿m hoping that you will be able to help me start heading in the right direction. In this appeal I am requesting that the courses that I was enrolled in during the Fall term of 2015 be removed from my transcript. These classes include: CHEM 211, CHEM 212, CHEM 213 and FILM 240.
I am not requesting a credit standing, I am aware that I am not eligible for one as I have failed three of the courses listed above. However, I would like them to be removed from my transcript; I believe this means that I am requesting the courses be dropped and receive a ¿¿DR¿ on my transcript. I have been drastically struggling with my mental and emotional health these past few semesters at Queen¿¿s. Without going into too much detail, I have been suffering from insomnia, depression and self loathing, as well as anxiety that has lead to panic attacks of varying severity. Insomnia is something I have struggled with for the past few years of my life and is the reason I struggled academically in my first year. However, I have never dealt with anything like this before; it has affected by ability to attend class as well as drastically hindered my capacity to focus, complete work and retain information. At the beginning of the semester I joined the Varsity Water Polo Team in hopes that it would add structure to my life, as well as counteract my insomnia. Aside from that, I have not had the self-confidence to improve myself until now. I am not currently able to provide any form of documentation to attest to my mental or emotional state. Though I can say that I spoke to an academic counselor as soon as possible at the beginning of this 2016 winter term, regarding changing my academic plan at Queen¿¿s as well as being connected to the Student Wellness Center. I also ensured that the Student Wellness Centre would be able to refer me to a more intensive therapy in the community. I will be speaking to a counselor at Student Wellness on the 15th of January, at which point I will inquire about any documentation I may need to accompany this process. I know I require therapy; it has taken me a long time to come to accept that. Besides this big step that I have made, the only people I have talked to, sparingly, about my situation are my mother and a few close friends.
I truthfully believe that this is something that I can come back from; I know I can significantly improve myself mentally, emotionally and academically, I need only be given the opportunity to recover.
Sincerely,
Jacob MacTaggart
