Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Bénard,
I hope you are well. I am appealing to enroll in POLS 384, tutorial 2 (Winter, 2016).
At the start of the semester I had attempted to enroll in POLS 384, a mandatory course for me, but was unable to find a tutorial time that would fit my schedule. There were only two tutorials open and they were for the same time, a time that conflicted with one of my other classes. As a result, I put myself on the wait list for a tutorial that did work with my schedule, tutorial 2, and started attending lectures, thinking the problem would be resolved soon.
The professors had mentioned there was trouble with tutorials but they were working on the problem. I wrongly assumed that this meant they would be able to see I was not in a tutorial and would override SOLUS to enroll me. However, I did attempt to rectify the situation with my TA. The first week of tutorial 2 I explained my situation to the TA and she said it was no problem if I joined her tutorial. It was my understanding that she would email the profs, to have me officially enrolled. I recognize now that I should have emailed the profs directly but, at the time I was unsure of the best channels of communication and I thought that TA to prof communication would be more efficient. This was in week 2. In week 3, after the add drop deadline, I noticed I was still not officially enrolled in the course so I spoke to my TA who directed me to the Political Studies Department. From there I was directed to the Arts and Science office where they told me I would have to launch a formal academic appeal.
For the past four weeks I have been attending all the POLS 384 lectures and tutorials as well as keeping up with the course material. As such I am fully confident that I would be able to succeed in this course given the opportunity.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Lauren Rainsford

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I have attended all the POLS 384 lectures and meetings of tutorial section 2 each week since the course began. I have been participating in tutorial and am on the TA¿¿s attendance sheet so my participation grade would not suffer. I have also bought the textbook and have kept up with the readings. I have also started preparation on the first assignment due February 12th. Although not officially enrolled in the course, being on the waitlist, allowed me access to OnQ so I have been able to keep up with course content there too. Moving forward I don¿¿t anticipate any problems completing the course. I do anticipate problems if I am not successfully enrolled because POLS 384 is a mandatory course for my program.
