Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean and whom it may concern,
I have been struggling with mental illness since the beginning of first year and have received a variety of treatments. However, since mental illness is extremely specific to the individual, it has taken time to learn ways to cope and to find to which treatments and medications are effective in my particular case. It is a combination of mental illness and it's disabling symptoms as well as a traumatic experience I had in my first semester of second year which has greatly impacted my studies.
I realize that I need time to find stability within myself, and acknowledging my academics was extremely difficult due to the anxiety that it induced at that time. This is why it is only now that I am striving to improve on my academic situation and make it possible to be successful in the future. With a combination of new medications, therapy for recent events, and support from family I will improve. I am also considering taking a year break to ensure this does not happen again.
However, I am applying to drop courses I was unable to engage with academically and thus did not pass, so that my academic career is not completely tarnished. It is my understanding that the University is passionate about mental health initiatives and I hope to take further advantage of them in the future as I have before. I hope that although my past performance has not showcased my potential, that I will be able to continue in my academic aspirations.
Thank you for your time,
Sincerely,
Kate Pereira
