RE: Appeal to drop PSYC342 past deadline
Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am writing to request an appeal to drop PSYC342 (Winter, 2016) past the deadline. The stress of multiple competing deadlines in a short amount of time (two midterms as well as four major assignments due in the span of two days, February 8th and 9th, 2016), while still attending regular lectures and completing readings for in-class discussion, triggered a severe migraine that impaired my ability to study for my midterms. Of the two midterms, I am most concerned about PSYC342, as it is worth 40 of my grade, whereas my BIOL303 midterm is worth 10.
I have been managing these migraines with home care recommended by my family doctor, which usually involves restricting reading and screen time. In addition, the photosensitivity prevented reading or reviewing notes. I was unable to attend lectures on Friday, February 5th due to the severity. This migraine lasted approximately five days, and the midterm for PSYC342 was on the fourth day. I was embarrassed to approach the professor before the exam to explain the situation because doing so would have involved walking to the front and admitting I wasn't well where the class could easily overhear. The exam was at 8:30AM, so I could not approach him earlier during the day.
I went home to see my family after classes on Friday, February 26, 2016. I had intended to drop the course from home. However, the weather had interfered with my parent's satellite internet service and I was unable to drop the course by the deadline. I thought that the deadline was later, but the deadline had passed when I returned to Kingston today.
In future, I will not be embarrassed to approach my professors when my health could influence my academic performance in their course. I have ceased volunteering, and reduced my work hours in an attempt to reduce stress and to leave more time for studying. I will continue to do my best and avoid migraine triggers as much as possible. I am planning to enroll in PSYC397 (Summer 2016), effectively replacing PSYC342 to complete the Cluster B requirements of my Biology SSP degree, if my appeal is granted.
I appreciate your time in considering my request. Please contact me by phone or email if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Brigitte Simmatis
