Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to receive a credit standing for COGS 100 and BIOL 102 (Fall, 2015).
Almost three years ago, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Thankfully, my surgery was successful and the tumour was fully removed. However, my biggest challenge since then has been my recovery process. The first few months after my surgery took a huge emotional and physical toll on me and at times I felt like I was losing myself. I was not reacting well to my medications, I was constantly sick, and the stress of getting back to my school routine caused me to have several seizures. As time went by everything started to look up and by the time I started my studies here at Queen¿¿s I had been seizure free for almost a year. Unfortunately, a month or so into first semester, I had the worst seizure I have ever had and had to go to the hospital. I went back to Toronto to meet with my neurologist seeing as how I was unable to meet with the one I had here in Kingston, and after numerous exams I was told that the stress and the new environment were what had caused the seizure. Unfortunately, when one has a seizure as big as the one I had, it takes time for the person to feel like themself again and that is exactly what happened to me. I had trouble focusing and memorizing information, I was constantly tired, I experienced soreness and physical pain for quite some time due to severe convulsion during the seizure, and overall I was just mentally overwhelmed and frustrated. Time passed and by the end of the semester, near final exams, I had another seizure, and as expected, my performance and grades were drastically impacted.
As a result of my health issues since first semester, I have taken a lighter course load this term and am constantly in contact with my neurologist back home in hopes that everything remains fine. We are also currently deciding on whether I should stay on the same medication and increase my dosage, or if I should fully change to another drug. In addition, I have had my family physician refer me to a new neurologist here in Kingston so that I can have someone nearby in case of emergencies. I have also connected with accessibly services and plan to seek out formal accommodations as needed.
