Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Friday, February 26th 2016

Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing to request credit standing in PSYC 202 and SOCY 275 which I completed in the Fall 2015 term.
There has been a combination of events in my life that have added up to the extent of dramatically affecting my academic abilities. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of last year, which has been very difficult on me. I was constantly worried about her, and therefore my mind was not focused on my studies. I considered dropping some courses, but I had hoped that I would be able to catch up. Things then started to get much worse in December, and I had missed the course-drop date. At the same time as my mom being sick, my older brother was going through addiction and depression issues. I watched as his sporadic bouts of depression ate away at him, at times dragging him so deep into the darkness that I could hardly recognize the person he had become. He became incapable of living the normal life he once was more than capable of living; and it was utterly heartbreaking and terrifying to witness. Being his sister, and best friend, I couldn¿¿t just watch him, I felt like I had to be there for him at every given minute. Which again, took me away from working hard to do well in school.
I went home every weekend in October and November while my mother was going through her medical treatments, taking time away from doing school work. I would attend her chemotherapy sessions with her, as well as provide my brother with the support he needed, and take him to his appointments. When it came time to study for an exam, or write an assignment, I found myself rushing through it, and not putting my full potential into my work because of the anxiety and stress I was experiencing about my mom and brother. All of my marks suffered to some extent, but two in particular suffered dramatically from my anxiety, PSYC 202 and SOCY 275. It was difficult to manage all six of my courses, I tried my very best to do what I could, but it just wasn¿¿t good enough.
I plan to make some adjustments in my life in order to achieve academic success. I will be making some personal changes, including, seeing a counsellor through Queens Counselling Services at least once a week to ensure I am in a stable and comfortable place. Additionally, I will seek out a peer tutor in some of my more difficult courses so that I am keeping up with my work, and so that I am where I need to be in terms of academic ability.

Sincerely,

Charlotte Coffey
