Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies (Artsci),

I am requesting the faculty¿¿s permission to drop POLS 385 (Fall 2015) passed the drop deadline in order to retake it in my 4th year at Queen¿¿s.

For some time, I have battled severe low mood and feelings of depression as a result of deteriorated mental health. These emotions intensified over the last year, and during the semester of Fall 2015, they began to pose a serious threat to my mental health. I struggled considerably in POLS 385 and I was faced with extreme anxiety and feelings hopelessness throughout the term as a result. I felt incompetent and was overcome with feelings of personal guilt for being unable to grasp the concepts quickly, having not taken any math-based courses in my time at university. I felt like a letdown to not only myself, but to my peers and to my family at home. Despite my efforts to overcome these initial struggles, I often experienced difficulty focusing and concentrating, and would become overwhelmed with anxiety when working for long periods. I needed extensions on many of my term assignments in other courses in order to complete them to the best of my ability as well. Eventually these damaging thoughts consumed me, and prevented me from living life on my own terms. I forgot to do simple things like eat properly and I no longer enjoyed my usual hobbies. I found myself debilitated against what seemed to be an impossible challenge in my academics.

Once I realized my personal health was being compromised I knew I had to solve these problems, instead of allowing them to manifest into an even more unhealthy situation. I met with Charles Vetere at Queen¿¿s counselling on several occasions last semester as a response to my low mood and persistent anxiety. I plan to continue my counselling sessions at Queen¿¿s as they have proven to be a viable outlet for maintaining my mental health. The department has provided me with many valuable solutions and I know that in 4th year I will be able to preserve an adequate level of mental health to do well in POLS 385.
