Petition Letter: Dear Assistant Dean Blake,
This email is to request a CR in both Chemistry 112 and Bio 102 due to extenuating medical circumstances in my first year. My condition is documented with medical letters from Dr. Pegado and Dr. Lacoursiere and my initial letter of appeal outlining my medical condition following my head injury in my first year. This information should be accessible within my appeal file.
My first year was very traumatic both psychologically and physiologically. I suffered a serious brain bleed in my first year while taking Biology 102 and Chemistry 112 and struggled to achieve academically to a level that I was previously capable of. I had extreme challenges reading from my computer or a textbook due to the permanent damage to my right medial eye muscles. I was constantly fatigued and I was rarely well enough to attend lecture. During much of my first year, I spent prolonged periods of time in my bed in a dark room waiting for my brain and eyes to heal. Unfortunately, my symptoms took much longer to improve than initially expected and for the much of my first year I was very disabled.
In previous documentation, it was noted that my marks were inconsistent in first year. As previously explained, in my appeal to the Board and to USAB, the courses I achieved in were because of their course design. Health 101 required little reading and was mostly discussion based on common knowledge material. Chemistry 112 and Biology 102 required large amounts of reading and processing new information. Given my cognitive and visual condition it was extremely challenging to succeed in those courses.
Due to my prolonged extenuating circumstances I performed well under my capabilities in my first year and would appreciate consideration of this appeal.
