Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hello, I am submitting this appeal for AG standing in order due to a couple serious and unforeseen circumstances that have piled up on my in the past month. These problems are that I have been diagnosed with Mono; that my Mother has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer for the third time in about two and half years; and that I have been diagnosed with a General Anxiety Disorder. These circumstances have made it very difficult to complete work in my classes and as a result I find myself struggling to keep up with the work.
First, in mid to late February I was diagnosed with Mono. Simply put, Mono can make it extremely difficult to function as a person. The symptoms of Mono at the beginning are swollen tonsils, headaches, fevers, and dizziness. These can be treated, but you Mono makes you extremely tired. Simple things like walking a block to the corner store were impossible for me. Standing up for more than 5 minutes is impossible, I had to sit down when I was cooking dinner because I would become too tired to do anything. I would sleep for a minimum of 12 hours and I usually took naps during the day. Doing chores around the house as impossible and I couldn't even go buy my own groceries much less attend class or keep up with schoolwork. Due to this I set up a meeting with an Academic Advisor to discuss my options and originally we decided upon deferring two of my POLS courses until I was better. I sorted that out with my instructors and all was well. However, learning of my Mom's diagnosis it became harder. Originally I thought I could manage the stress and the exhaustion from Mono, but I have since learned I simply cannot.
My Mother's re-diagnosis has been extremely hard. I have had to experience this before and it is very difficult to stay focused on anything else when you are so concerned for your loved one. In previous years I have continued on with my school work, but it is my experience that this is very difficult and considering that it is the third time she has been diagnosed with such little time between them, I really need to go home and be with my family.
In addition to these problems, in the summer I was diagnosed with a General Anxiety Disorder for which I have medication. Under normal circumstances the mediation should help me feel fine, however these circumstances are not normal. Due to the Mono, I was generally incapable of going anywhere and I was very isolated for most of the time because of the amount of rest and sleep I needed. This added to the stress of keeping up with class work and simply being antisocial is not good for anxiety. Furthermore, my mother¿¿s diagnosis adds to the anxiety for obvious reasons as I know the coming months are going to be extremely hard on my family. With all this considered and also my school work falling behind I became overwhelmed and my anxiety skyrocketed. I was not in a seriously dangerous state of mental health.
The reason I am applying for AG standing is simply because I want to be graded on the work that I have completed in the course. I feel the reasons provided for my appeal are quite uncommon and certainly unforeseen, and I think they are serious enough to warrant the granting of this appeal. I went home to be with my family and to get better when it comes to mental health, and I can complete my undergraduate degree from here. But in order to do that I must get my credits for this course, and considering the extenuating circumstances regarding both my physical and mental illness, along with that of my Mother, I feel that AG standing is an appropriate route to take in this situation.
I hope you feel the same,
Evan Braun
