Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies)
a. Request
I am formally requesting to receive an aegrotat standing (AG) for HLTH102, MATH121, and PSYC100. I am submitting this appeal due to my recent concussion. To my understanding, I can appeal for this with extenuating circumstances which are beyond my control as I have completed 60 of the work required for these courses. If this appeal is accepted, my term mark will then become my final mark. I am currently trying to contact my GEOL106 and ECON112 professors to request that these exams are deferred until the summer as I do not qualify for an aegrotat standing for these two courses. If I am still having difficulties when these exams are written, I may need to appeal for a credit granted standing for these two courses. As I am in first year, the three courses I am appealing for an AG standing are required for my degree selection for second year studies.
b. Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances
I received a concussion on March 5, 2016. I have already informed all five of my professors of this. This injury and its resulting symptoms are beyond my control. This injury is affecting my ability to focus and concentrate, making me physically and mentally fatigued, causing constant headaches, increasing my need for sleep, quiet and decreased stress. This has been debilitating for my academic performance leading to missed classes, greatly reduced study time, and a need for assignment extensions. I have been followed by both my family doctor and a concussion specialist, Dr. O¿¿Connor. I have been compliant with their recommendations. I have provided their notes with this appeal.
Unfortunately, this is my third concussion and I have learned the hard way that I have a poor recovery record dealing with post-concussion syndrome. My first concussion took a year to recover and my second concussion was a six month recovery. Like any physical injury, returning to normal activities too soon prolongs recovery and causes more damage. In spite of my symptoms, I have recently tried very hard to make up for lost time. Unfortunately, this only made my symptoms worse. I really need to look after my health and recover from this as recommended by my specialist. Despite being approved for accommodations during the regular exam period, my cognitive impairments have not recovered and I am not capable of writing these exams and performing with my usual abilities. I feel that writing exams with these symptoms would actually be detrimental to my health. After discussing my situation and possible options with Ms. Spring Forsberg-Lewis, an academic advisor, I have decided that an AG standing is my best option for these three courses.
c. Future Plan
I will continue to be cared for by my specialist. After I have had time to properly rest and recover over the summer, I plan to return to regular studies in the fall. I will consider taking four courses rather than five if that is advised at the time.
I am attaching three medical notes. Please contact me if further information or documentation is required.
Thank-you very much for your consideration in this matter. This is a very stressful situation for me and I am hoping to be able to have the best outcome possible for my first year at Queens as I have worked very hard so far.
Sincerely,
Jenna Ling (10192158)
