Dear Sir/Madam,
I am appealing to drop GEOL 104 (Winter 2016), and GEOL (winter 2016)
In September of 2015 I moved into residence as a first year student. As I was moving in I was in the process of breaking up with my long-time girlfriend. I ended up withdrawing from classes before they had even begun, and I went home to Peterborough as I was having trouble dealing with this. By December I decided to return to studies so I rented a sublet for January 2016, and enrolled in the only 4 half credit courses available to me. On December 28 I was sleeping at my friend¿¿s house, Thomas Chan, when he had a psychotic breakdown, ran out of his mother¿¿s house and down the street to where his father lived. Thomas stabbed his father to death and severely wounded his father¿¿s girlfriend. After this I was questioned by the police for many hours over many days as to what I¿¿d witnessed. Determined to get out of Peterborough and to begin my studies, I went to Queen¿¿s a few days later as a first year student living off campus. After what I¿¿d just been through it was probably not a good idea to start Queen¿¿s at this time. I think that trying to adjust to university and dealing with what I had just been through was too much. I had trouble concentrating and focusing at school and I dropped two of the four courses, before the drop date. I did go for two counselling sessions through Queen¿¿s but I felt that they were not helping. Presently I am still in both GEOL 104 and GEOL 106 and am having much difficulty trying to focus on my studies with these underlying issues.
I would really like to be able to come back to Queen¿¿s next year with a clean slate and I do not want this past semester to tarnish my reputation at Queen¿¿s. I feel by next September I will have had more time to deal with my situation. I feel that by then I will be able to focus on my studies without the past few months impacting me to the extent it is now. I have a house already rented with a group of good friends that I have known for years and this group, I am sure, will be a good support for me.
Thank you for your consideration,
Dylan Purves
