Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies,
I am requesting that the faculty allows me to drop Biology 303 (2015). Although it is past the deadline I would like to appeal that decision and retake the course in my 4th year here at Queen¿¿s.
I have had a hard time coping with an issue in my personal life over the past few months, and have let this issue significantly impact my academic performance. The personal issue I was facing was the attempted suicide of a close friend at the beginning of second semester. After this traumatic event I was overwhelmed and unable to focus on and see the importance of keeping up with my day-to-day academic tasks. This event was the first significant traumatic event that I have had to deal with and I lacked the coping abilities to do so, and let it influence my mental thoughts bringing me into a period of anxiety that I was unable to properly cope with. I had also started spending more and more time with my friend in an effort to support him, when I should have been working on my academics. While my heart may have been in the right place these actions proved to me disastrous academically causing me to fall behind. This was followed by another poor academic decision, not dropping the course before the add/drop date. I was considering doing so at the time, but having never failed a class before and being in a comprised mental state I decided to try to persevere and pull my grades up. Unfortunately the internal struggles I was experiencing due to this issue caused me to disengage from my academics. I began to forget just how important my education was and lost my ability to focus. Currently the uncertainty of my ability to drop this course is giving me great amounts of anxiety, due to a failing mark making me un-eligible for most grad schools, and making me have to rethink my future.
While this issue in my personal life was traumatic, such traumatic events are not uncommon and I should not have let it put my academic future in jeopardy. Meeting with a Queen¿¿s councilor has help give me coping abilities so when the next unforeseen traumatic event occurs in my life I will be better prepared to deal with it. The mental health of my friend has improved significantly in the last month, which has been a great relief to me and significantly boosted my mood and motivation. With this event now firmly in the past I¿¿m hoping to succeed in my future academic endeavors, and hope that what has happened this term will not haunt me for the rest of my academic career.
