Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dean of Studies,
I am submitting this to appeal the decision taken by the Faculty asking me to withdraw for a period of three years. For obvious reasons this would be a disastrous turn of events and do serious harm to my life and academic career. I experienced some significant difficulties here at the University in the 2012/13 academic year. I am appreciative of the opportunity granted to me by the Faculty to return to school and chance programs. My initial entry into a pure science program proved to not be a good one. I re-committed myself to my studies this past year and my grades are showing the benefits. My annual GPA was approximately 1.9 compared to approximately .7 last year. I very much enjoyed the Arts courses I took this past year and If eel as though I have made a great decision to change disciplines.
I had two extenuating circumstances in this last academic year that had an impact on my abilities as a student. In late October of 2013, I was injured whereby my nose was broken and needed surgery (photos have been attached). I was breaking up a violent conflict and was inadvertently struck by an assailant causing me the physical harm. I required several visits to the hospital to have my nose set and re-set. This was extremely painful and occurred at a time when I was completing assignments and preparing for exams. Despite the trauma to my face, I performed reasonably well in my fall term exams.
The second issue I dealt with this year was being diagnosed with mononucleosis. This occurred early in the second semester and persisted for much of January. I did not feel myself until well after the winter break. For financial reasons I am required to work part time for income to supplement my student loan. Studying, working part-time and playing varsity football seemed to take its toll on my physical health and ability. That said, I was much improved compared to the previous year.
This past year I met regularly with the Athletic Student Services Coordinator as a pre-condition to my being permitted to continue this past year. I am on the right track and have a solid plan in place that will help me get to where I need to be. I plan to become a teacher in the future and have researched the requirements and pathway necessary for success. I am hoping that the improvement I have shown and the bizarre circumstance I faced this past year will provide the committee with a reason to allow me to continue. I believe I am more than capable of achieving my goals here at Queen¿¿s.

Yours Sincerely,

Stewart Anoya (ID 10028047)

Academic Plan for the year 2014/15

The focus of my studies moving forward will be to study History in an effort to secure enough credits to comply with the Ontario College of Teachers standard for a teachable subject in Ontario High Schools. After a difficult first year in 2012/13 I have decided to take a maximum of four courses per term until such time as I am off probation. I have already engaged in a structured program provided by the Athletics department and supervised by Andrew Goodspeed. This has proven to be highly beneficial for me. In addition, I will have regularly scheduled visits with my head Football Coach, to receive some personalized instruction and to discuss academic matters on an ongoing basis. The Head Coach is a former teacher with a Master¿¿s degree, who has agreed to oversee my case personally. I have already had several sessions with my coach which has proven to be fruitful. In addition, I am committed to an even higher level of academic improvement by meeting with a study group comprised of fellow students regularly to discuss academic matters as they pertain to my courses.
I have already reached out to all available professionals at the university and received positive responses that they will be happy to assist me to move forward academically. I will continue to make use of any and all available resources both on campus and online to support my cause.
I am currently relying on my coach and Athletics¿¿ staff for assistance because my family is unable to help in this matter. I come from a single parent household and my mother does not communicate well in English. She is, however, very supportive of my efforts to succeed.
Although there are many students who choose to take five full courses in a given tern, I feel it best to take a maximum of four courses until things improve academically. Although I feel that the extenuating circumstances that I experienced this past year were singular events, I feel it best to leave myself more time for what¿¿s most important.
The most critical academic skill I plan to improve this year is my ability to write effective term papers and essays. I have already sought out professional help in this area. I also plan on making regular visits to the Writing Center here at Queen¿¿s to help tie off any loose ends.
Although my personal finances are always a cause for concern, I am managing and I am working to make the necessary funds to return to school. I stayed in Kingston this summer to keep up with bills associated with living and prepare for my return in September. I will seek out help immediately if difficulties occur, but I don¿¿t anticipate any this year.

My desired courses for the 2014/15 academic year in order to achieve a degree and later pursue teachers college include:
1. HIST 124
a. A core course required in the History major. One that I know I can excel in given my increased improvement in the other history classes I took this past year.
2. HLTH 101/102
a. A supplemental course required to have Biology as a minor. Another class I know I can do well in with all the information and knowledge I gained through nutrition and training with football.
3. CLST 200
a. Another course required to have history as a major. I enjoyed the first classics class I took so I think continuing on that path is a good choice.
4. ANAT 100/101
a. One of my core classes for my biology minor.
I am confident that I have been on the right track to achieve success and I feel as though these courses are only leading me further down that track.
