Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies),
I am a first-year student appealing for aegrotat standing in one of my courses, specifically MUSC203.

The reason for this is because I have missed my final exam as a result of sleep deprivation and unhealthy sleep patterns.

I have always had trouble sleeping when under stress, and as a result often go more than 72 hours without sleeping before my body physically succumbs to fatigue and I can sleep. This has been reflected in all of my coursework this year as I typically do well but there are occasional spikes of missed assignments and poor attendance as a result of my trouble sleeping.

Specifically, in MUSC203 I have missed the final exam as I crashed the morning of the exam, unable to wake up (despite a friend calling me numerous times) and did not write the exam.

To provide some context, I am doing well in MUSC203 with currently a 4.0 GPA in the course. I had prepared well for the exam and was looking forward to finishing strong but my body was hurting and I couldn¿¿t prevent myself from falling asleep despite having taken several caffeine pills.

In the future years that I am here at Queen¿¿s I will be sure to manage my workload better so that I do not reach the levels of stress that I tend to reach during busy times of the academic year. Better time management will definitely be beneficial in helping me manage my stress.

I¿¿ve talked to the faculty members as well as my professor but they are unwilling to give me an opportunity to write a make-up exam so that is why I¿¿m appealing for aegrotat standing. Despite being a first-year who is still adjusting to the pace of university, it seems their decision is final.

Please do consider my appeal, I would appreciate it very much as it is truly frustrating to have worked hard at a course only to fail because my body would not co-operate with me at a crucial time.

Thank you,
Andrew Ingun Kim (10182877)
