Arts & Sciences

Dear Board of studies,
I am appealing to drop all courses and take a leave for the 2016-17 school year. I have had various personal issues that have forced me to postpone my studies during the year, and I will describe exactly what has happened.
I am requesting an appeal because of the effects these circumstances had on my life during the last two semesters. During the summer of 2015, I had to resolve a judicial conflict between me and my partner, which had forced us to deal with a restraining order that was set against her, and solve such issue following the outcome of this situation and its effects on our return to school. I came back to Queen's in September as I still had to solve this personally between me and her. It led to a lot of confusion as the restraining order was removed during the end of August 2015. Following this, this judicial conflict, had haunted me for months because of unclarified problems which therefore kept me distracted from my sole purpose which was to cherish and focus on my studies and Philosophy. The transition from Bader to Kingston was also very daunting, It took some time to settle and get used to this new style of study and this new life, and therefore it took some time to get adjusted to find my comfort zone.

During this time, I had a virus Chlamydia which I did not know I had contracted during the summer, I was diagnosed with such during the beginning of the fall term. I had kept this virus for about 7 months, before being aware which means I had contracted it in the summer of 2015. My parents were worried about my state of health as they could clearly see the effects that this had on my physiological and psychological stability. I was losing weight, depressed and constantly tired but I never thought this would have happened. When I came back to Kingston in January, I went through a very tough depression and saw a counsellor so that I could take a break and go home. I was also surrounded by negative influences, and roommates that would drink a lot and party a lot when I needed to rest so I absolutely needed to leave Queen's for a moment. The (STI) and the stress built throughout this relationship had caused a big shock in my life, my health kept on getting worse every week and it completely destabilized my own peace of mind. I simply could not focus. I had symptoms that could have lead to hypothyroidism, but furthermore it was identified as phasic nervous breakdowns because of uncontrollable heart palpitations and uncontrollable transitions of emotional states, (Minor Bipolar Disorder). I needed to move to a clean environment which was home and be with my family to rejuvenate and fix my health issues. During this whole situation, coincidentally, my parents had separated before Christmas Break, and this also shocked me as I was trying to take care of my self in the first place. During the fall term, I was forced to logically end this relationship between me and my partner, and this put me in a deeper depression.
Hence, I have been forced throughout these two semesters to postpone my studies, I have had a very hard time to concentrate and complete my work according to the schedule, I did not attend most of my classes due to these breakdowns. I did not once feel at my full potential, I was constantly struggling and could not focus as I needed to solve issues at home, with my family and mainly with my mental and physiological health issues. During exams, I did not perform at my full potential and the work submitted for my classes, was clearly not a representation of my skills.
Therefore, I am asking to drop all courses that I have taken in the two semesters this year and I would like to apply for summer courses online because I only have a total of 24 credits, or come back during the session of 2017-18 to start my second year. I am asking to erase the record for my second year of study so that it does not affect my GPA, starting in September 2015 and ending in May 2016.

I will be taking a full year to work on my self, work on music and philosophy by myself, so that I can get into my own rhythm and therefore study Philosophy because I truly love it, I just simply need to get into an independently self-sustainable rhythm of life. I want to read every day, study and work so that I can come back and pay for my own studies. That is my goal in the next year. I will be re-taking these courses when I return to Queen's.

Thank you,
regards.
ER.
