Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to drop SPAN 306 (Winter 2016) past the final drop date for classes. I have received the consent of Professor Daniel Chamberlain for this request pending approval through this appeal.
In this past semester I was struggling with a great deal of psychological challenges, such as personal anxieties and health issues with my family. I have spoken with Counseling services provided by Queen¿¿s University. Counselor Chuck Vetere was very helpful and agreed that my extenuating circumstances warranted an appeal. My psychological challenge caused me to develop very erratic sleeping patterns and forced a great deal of exhaustion. As a result of this I was absent from a great deal of classes this past semester. This particular class has a very high dependency and grade percentage linked to attendance and active participation. Although my performance had been reduced across the majority of my classes, this one in particular was beyond my ability to salvage my grade and finish the semester. For my other classes many of them were not dependent on attendance, and through independent studying I was able to finish the semester. For the other that was dependent on attendance I am working with the professor to achieve an incomplete status and continue my studies over the course of the summer. Specifically, for this course however, it was decided between the professor and I that it would be best to drop the course to be retaken in the new scholastic year.
For going ahead with the intention of achieving success, as stated above I will be retaking the course in question. As for handling my personal and family struggles, I believe that with help I will be able to overcome these. The struggles with my family are particularly health based and in recent days there has been improvement in that regard. As for the challenges that I face personally, I believe that as time progresses I am becoming more adept at handling them, but more importantly I had discussed the possibility of continued counseling services with Chuck Vetere, and I will not be so hesitant in the future to seek help. Through this it is my belief that I will be able to find success in the new scholastic year.
Sincerely,
John Jacob Ruddy
