Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am personally appealing my marks for my final essays in the courses SOCY122 and DEVS100. Firstly, I am appealing both of these marks because of the timing for both of these assignments. In the end of February there was an incident that occurred which hindered my performance on both essays. This incident occurred on February 27th and I reported it to my Don, Toros Canturk on February 28th, who then reported it to Residence Life Coordinator, Welsey Forget due to the severity of the incident. After speaking with my Don on the 28th I realized that I no longer felt safe on campus and in my dorm and went back home to be with my family. I returned to Queen¿¿s the following week and was contacted by Wesley Forget who is the Residence Life Coordinator. I met with Wesley March 4th to discuss the incident and my options for reporting and the counselling that was available to me. I tried to put myself back into a regular routine. But, found it very difficult to concentrate and focus for long periods because of the anxiety that I was experiencing from the incident. I tried my best to finish my essays but I do not feel like I was in the right frame of mind to have put in my best effort. Therefore, I am appealing the SOCY122 essay because I left school to deal with the trauma at home with the support of my parents and this essay was due on March 4th. Also the topic of the SOCY122 essay was closely connected to the matter of the incident. I found it very difficult to talk about the subject during that time. Then the DEVS100 essay came in beginning of March which was when I started to experience panic and anxiety attacks as a result of the incident. Since then I have been working with Freeman Woolnough the Residence Outreach Counsellor. We first met on March 22nd and I continued to see him until I finished my first year at Queen¿¿s. Seeing Freeman and his therapy helped control my anxiety and helped towards making Queen¿¿s feel like a safe place once again.
Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I feel that the counseling I received from Freeman Woolnough really helped deal with the anxiety and panic attacks that I was experiencing. Freeman has recommended counselors close to my home, which I will continue to see while I am home this summer. As for second year, Freeman has planned to connect me with another Queen¿¿s counselor to help deal with any anxiety that I experience with moving back to Queen¿¿s.
