Petition Letter: Dear Academic Appeal Board,
My name is Philippa Goodleaf, and I am a third year Applied Economics student. I am conducting this appeal in the hopes that I may enrol late in STATS 263 online summer course.
As an Economics student, I must obtain a minimum of a grade C in statistics. Unfortunately, I have taken the Economics equivalent of ECON 250 (Introduction to Stats), and did not meet this requirement. As a variety athlete on the Queen's Rowing team, in addition to taking a full course load, my time is often stretched thin and I cannot give every subject the full attention it deserves. Taking STATS 263 during the summer term is a perfect opportunity for me to fully immerse myself in the subject without worry of other classes.
In addition, it is of paramount importance for me to take this course during the summer, or I will not have the prerequisite to take the following required economics classes. This will result in my having to take an additional semester.
A supporting argument that can be made in favour of me enrolling in STATS 263 late is that I have taken a statistics class before (ECON 250). Therefore, I am familiar with the material. This will allow me to catch up more quickly and efficiently than if it were an entirely new subject to me. Other than my professional work over the summer, I have no other academic responsibilities. As I mentioned before, this will additionally allow me to focus my energy on fully understanding the material at hand.
Prior to today, I had been traveling with my family, with limited Internet access. Because of a misleading email from the Queen's University Faculty to Arts and Sciences, I had believed that today (May 13) was the last day you could add or drop classes, but I have now learned that tomorrow is the final day that you may drop classes only. It was due to this reason, as well as having a Senate Sanction block on my account because of over due fees that I made this mistake. I was only able to pay these overdue fees once I began to work again now that I have returned home to New York for the summer. It was not possible for me to afford to pay these fees prior.
I take full responsibility for the oversight, but I urge you to please consider to allow me to enrol in this class. I strongly believe that I will be able to make up the missed work in the time it takes for this appeal to run its course, and I will be successful in the completion of this class. It is very important to stress, as Economics Undergraduate Chair Jennine Ball agreed, that the failure to enrol in this class will result in me having to take another semester of study. This is a situation that I will try my absolute hardest to avoid for the sake of my professional and academic career.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: As for mentioned in my Appeal Letter, if granted late enrolment, STATS 263 will be my sole academic responsibly for the summer session of 2016. Given this, the course material will have my full attention and I will be able to immerse myself into the content. The issue of why I have been unsuccessful taking statistics before is because of the crowing out effect that my other very challenging coursework had on me and my performance within stats. Ultimately, my attention for the course yielded to other courses. This summer, this will not be the case.
I understand that the lateness of entry to the course will be of worry to the Academic Appeal board. I have received the support of Professor Molson to enter the class late, and I plan on keeping a close correspondence with him as questions arise over missed work. I strongly believe that my familiarity of the course material will allow me to enter late without skipping a beat.
In addition, I live in an area that has no shortage of academic resources. If I find that I enter at a place of the course that I feel I cannot catch up on my own, I am more than comfortable finding and hiring a private tutor to help me. I have accessed many tutors before using the Gaels Varsity Athlete tutoring system, and am very comfortable working with tutors.
