Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am appealing the Faculty of Arts and Science to request Aegrotat standing in Econ 250 (Statistics).
I suffer from a debilitating syndrome of eye pain and vision loss that is currently under investigation and management from several neurologists. Throughout my two years at Queens so far, my eye pain has made it extremely difficult for me to take tests and achieve the desired grades that I know I am capable of. The condition started after a severe concussion in grade 11 (2012) and has become worse ever since. No matter how much I study or feel completely prepared for a test, if the eye pain occurs it usually takes away my thinking process, my vision and causes excruciating pain.
I have been working very hard in this course and doing well leading up to my exam. I was unaffected from the eye pain for both my assignments and my first midterm where I achieved an 80-89.5-grade range. I had a terrible episode of eye pain before my second midterm and tried to write it anyways which was not as successful for me. I studied incredibly hard for my final exam, however two days before my exam date I had to email my professor asking to defer it due to a terrible episode of eye pain that suddenly hit me. Due to a week break in between my other exams, I chose not to request to defer any of my other exams because my eye pain had become slightly more manageable at that point.
I have been studying for the statistics exam at home since the school year has ended, preparing to write the final exam still dealing with eye pain symptoms. I was preparing to write it Thursday May 18th, worrying that if I pushed it back any further I would start to become unfamiliar with the material. I have been in constant communication with my Professor Gregor Smith who has been very helpful to me with my situation. He sent me an email today (Wednesday May 18th) informing me of the possibility to apply for an Aegrotat standing and that he would support my application. Although I feel prepared for my exam my eye pain symptoms have not yet subsided and they seem to be getting worse. I worry that if I try and write the final exam, my grade will go down due to my eye pain opposed to accepting the grade that I have in the course at this point.
Since I have been home, I have seen my doctor, Dr. Grevler (April 28th) and an eye specialist (Friday the 13th) who is sending me to a binocular eye specialist next week. I also have a follow up neurology appointment to review my MRI results on May 31st that will hopefully give me some answers and solutions to my syndrome. The eye specialist has prescribed me with glasses that she hopes will help with the eyestrain that could be a contributing factor to my syndrome. She also found some abnormal results in some of my tests that she is currently investigating and hopefully will provide me with solutions to my problem.
This eye pain has been traumatically affecting my academic work and I am going to consult with an academic advisor at Queens to discuss accommodations that I might need in order to succeed. Due to this condition, my tests do not reflect the amount of work and effort that I put into my studies so I will also meet with the Queen¿¿s Student Accessibility Service. I have been trying to deal with my situation on my own so far and I have learned that it is better to seek out the helpful resources that Queens has to offer.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read my letter and considering me for an Aegrotat Standing.
