Petition Letter
Petition Letter: This letter is to be addressed to the Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing for a CR Request in MICR 221(D+) in the winter term 2016 and PHGY 214(C-) that took place in the fall and winter term of 2015 and 2016 respectfully. I am only appealing these two classes because it was mentioned online that only grades under a C were recommended to appeal and failed class couldn¿¿t be appeal. Before this last term my lowest mark was a B and this winter term 2016 I ended up with an F, D+, and C-. This was not caused because the classes were harder because for my full year class (PHGY214) after the first half of the course load (Fall Term and 50 of the course load) I had a B and ended up getting a C-, meaning that the Winter Term went a lot worse. Before this winter term my GPA was slowly increasing. In the span of that one term my GPA dropped by 0.5, and I wouldn¿¿t want the fact that I had an issue with my mental health affect my chances into getting into med school or some other graduate school.
An event happened about a week into the Winter Term that affected me greatly and I believe affected my capability to do well in my courses. I lost interest in my school work and would spend my days sleeping and staying in bed, missing classes left and right which had never happened to me before, I used to go to every classes, missing the odd one due to sickness. I would hardly eat, stopped going to the gym which I had been doing regularly since I was sixteen and lost interest in seeing people. I would only force myself to get up and go to my mandatory labs and tutorials. Then I go strep throat which did not help my mental state. That lasted until reading week, I thought going home and being with my family would help, I thought it did at the time, but as soon as I got back to school, my, what I would describe now as a depression, was back. I never went to go seek help for the same reason it took me this long to write this appeal, because I did not want to admit to myself that something was wrong with me. As the end of the Winter Term approached, I still did not want to interact with anyone, felt sad and helpless and that was turning into anger because it had been lasting for over 2month and I was still feeling the same way. Also as finals were approaching I knew I was doing awful and the fear of losing my scholarship was increasing and that induce panic attacks when I was studying or when I would think about everything. The hardest part was keeping everything to myself because I do not like talking about my issues. I told my parents at some point after reading week and they told me they knew because I was acting different and seemed to have lost interest, they advised me to go talk to a health-care professional but I wasn¿¿t ready to do so.
As of today I still haven¿¿t spoken to a health-care professional and don¿¿t think I will, but being surrounded with my family has helped. I have been eating normally, restarted gaining interest in seeing people and have slowing regained interest in my hobbies like going to the gym, which has helped with the anger side of things. I am retaking Chem 282 this summer, the class I failed last term, and am feeling excited and motivated to do so and prove to myself that I am able to do well in that class and that my mental state is back to normal.
Thank you for taking the time to read over my appeal,
Adrien Durandeau
