Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am Appealing to drop ARTH 212 (Winter 2016), ARTH 228 (Winter 2016), CLST 203 (Winter 2016), and requesting to waive the 21-day appeal deadline.

Due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control my academic performance was directly affected. Throughout the academic year, I was dealing with multiple medical issues which effected me daily physically and mentally. These medical issues began mid September and are still affecting me today. After a rough Fall 2015 semester I was feeling better and excited to complete my Winter 2016 semester but unfortunately my health continued to decline along with my academics.

In September a lump was found in my left breast. Throughout the academic year I attended multiple medical appointments for this issue, and eventually had a surgery booked to remove it at the end of April. Well other students were focused on finals, essays, exams, and moving out, I was preparing for surgery. This hindered my academic performance greatly causing me to do very poorly on exams. This surgery is also the reason I am requesting to waive the 21-day appeal deadline. After my surgery I was very ill and trying to recover and heal. My academic standings were not my focus. Due to this event beyond my control I had missed the 21-day appeal deadline.

Unfortunately, in at the beginning of March another severe medical issue came up putting another hold on my academics. This issue affected me daily, and inhibited me from attending many classes. Due to how many classes I could not attend it was extremely hard to perform well on test, and complete assignments in all my courses. I had seen a Health Care Professional at Queens LaSalle Student Wellness Services multiple times regarding this issue and had been proscribed multiple medications but unfortunately my body did not react well to these medications.

Well all this was going on a neurological condition I suffer from that causes me to have seizures worsened. This condition caused me to experience pre- seizure symptoms throughout most days from March till the end of April. This caused me to have to leave many of the few classes I could attend. Trying to balance my academics and health issues put extreme stress on my body causing me to have a seizure around the end of March. After experiencing a similar situation in first semester I thought my seizure condition was under control but due to triggers such as sleep derivation, stress, and other factors the condition worsened.

With these 3 major health issues effecting me through out the semester it was almost impossible to keep up with my academic. I was unable to balance my health with my academics. I was incapable of focusing solely on my academics and thriving academically. I realise now I should not have been attending school this year and instead should have been focusing on my health. A Verification of Illness form has been submitted into my file with the Faculty of Arts and Science and if needed I can provide more medical documentation.

Thank you for your consideration,
Paris Finn
