Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),

I am appealing to drop BIOL 331 (Winter, 2016) and BIOL 343 (Winter, 2016).

I lost two of my closely related family members in the past winter. This extenuating circumstance largely affects not only my personal situation but also academic performance. My paternal grandfather passed away in December 2015. I had a session with the school counselor, and we decided to reduce my course load to help me get through my grief. I also met with my therapist regularly to minimize the emotional effects on my academic performance. However, my parents informed me that my maternal grandfather¿¿s death in early February. Both my parents and my emotion fluctuated due to this grieving lost. I felt unsafe and lack of energy about even going outside my apartment because my life was totally out of control at that moment. I was not able to sleep well because I had the same nightmare about spiritual existence very often. This situation significantly affected my basic livings and academic performances. I could not make myself attend classes, tutorials, or exams since then. Both of them were so close to me because I grew with them instead of my parents. I was not able to do any schoolwork because I felt guilty whenever I concentrate. I blamed myself so bad for unable to companying them a bit longer and to pay back them for raising.

This situation lasted until late April. My instructor encouraged me to restart visiting a counselor to prevent it from getting worse. My counselor who will provide the supporting document for my appeal scheduled me a physical check and encouraged to start the session with my therapist if possible. After finishing our session, I somehow found a route to my recovery. Though I struggled at the beginning I have now finished my fifth session with my therapist this week. Besides, I am taking two summer courses to make up my academic performance for the past winter term. I will also retake these two courses I appeal to drop next winter to ensure my academic success.

Sincerely,
Ziyi Fan
