Petition Letter: Appeal Letter - Withdrawal For A Minimum Of 3 Years
Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
My name is Travis Perrin and I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a minimum of three years. I asked that this be waived due to the improvements I made this year with my grades and study habits.
I have been attending Queen¿¿s University since 2012/13 and I was asked to withdraw from studies during the academic year of 2014/15. I returned in the fall of 2015 for studies this past year, and made significant improvements. During the 2013/14 academic period I received grades consisting of F, F, F, D+, D+ which I acknowledge is unacceptable academic performance. The 2014/15 year I lived in Kingston and watched all my friends progress and be able to graduate with their respective 2016 classes. This was a major reality check and I returned to studies determined to better myself at studying and succeeding in school like my peers. I retook the courses I failed and some new courses, and succeeded for the most part. My grades this past academic year were C-, C-, C-, D+, D+, F. Although I failed a class this year, my individual GPAs from 2013/14 to 2015/16 went from 0.4 to 1.5. The Academic Probation laws state that if a student is returning to studies, then they will be monitored and their GPA for the coming academic session must exceed 1.9. My GPA wasn¿¿t that close to 1.9 but a 1.1 jump during one year of studies is a great improvement.
Having a future plan and academic plan is the biggest key for this appeal and I want to show that I will keep improving as a student and person. This year after returning from a 1 year withdrawal I made a huge improvement to my time management and studying habits. In the upcoming year for 2016/2017 I plan to improve even further. This year I promised myself I would study at least three hours everyday minimum even if I had no work to do, I would review notes and problems. It worked out for the most part. Next year I plan to do this as well and also instead of walking back to my house during the day I plan to stay on campus all day and use the library and all the learning facilities for assistance. Joining study groups for my classes and getting a tutor for MATH281 are only two of the things I am going to do next year to ensure further success. I am not making excuses, but MATH281 is an entirely different type of math and has a reputation for being one of the hardest courses at Queen¿¿s according to the professor who teaches it. Also, when it comes to exams and tests I get nervous and my mind blanks, which hurts my grades even further. To deal with this, I plan to use study groups before studying for exams to ensure I am confident with everything I¿¿ve learned. Also I plan to use the stress relieve events that the school has before exams to try and help me relax and not stress too much about my upcoming exams.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Academic Plan - Withdrawal For A Minimum Of 3 Years
As I stated in my Appeal Letter, I feel it is unjustified that I must withdraw for a minimum of three years because of the improvements I have made in my studies and grades overall. This academic plan will be my plan of what I must do in the upcoming year to succeed in my studies.
Course of Study
During the upcoming year I have to retake MATH281 for the third time. This class is very difficult and I cannot grasp the concept of it, but this year I plan to make an effort and not try and study for it on my own. I will find a group and study with them and if that isn¿¿t helping I will further make an effort to do well in this course by finding a tutor. This is the only class I have to retake and I plan to continue with my math degree by taking the remaining suggest two math courses (210,231) and also begin on taking courses over MATH300 which are more business oriented. Also, I am going to take electives which are focused on math and business so that I can fill out my 120 credits needed to graduate. This plan of action is verified, and I will be eligible for these classes because it is part of the Degree Plan which I am taking. I went through the course map on the Queen¿¿s website and this is the plan I am pursuing to ensure i receive my Bachelor of Science Honours in Math.
After taking these courses this year and hopefully succeeding, I plan on looking into getting a summer job and taking summer courses. I will do this by speaking with Career Services about work through SWEP or NSERC. I am going to try and get more involved with any extracurriculars, and not just the academic side of Queen¿¿s. I will also try to connect with job finding applications like LinedIn and Career Cruising.
A later plan for the 2017/2018 year, will be to finish my degree by completing all the remaining MATH300/400 classes that I need to and to fill out my credits with electives. If successful this year with my studies, study groups, and tutors, I will continue this in the next academic year to ensure my final success in getting my degree.
Reduced Course Load
My plan for courses and the amount of hours I spend in class is the same as before. I plan on taking 4 courses each semester. This is fair as I don¿¿t think it is the amount of class that is the problem. The problem that I believe I have is the end of the semester when it comes to writing exams. I stress out too easily, and in the appeal letter I stated that I will be joining study groups and seeking help from others at the school in order to reduce the amount stress I put on myself before exams.
During my earlier years of studies I also carried a part time job at the Dairy Queen on Princess St. This upcoming year I will not be taking that job as my plan will to be to 100 focus on my studies. This will ensure that I have time to complete every assignment to the best of my abilities.
Strategies for Success
The reason behind my low grades before was lack of studying and study habits. . I have many strategies for success that I will go through. First, is to build on what I have done this year. I raised my GPA a significant amount by just studying by myself for more time that I ever have. To build on this I plan to study even more and to do it with a group and to seek help from tutors if I need it. Another plan I have next year is to enrol myself into a club or some type of extracurricular activities so I may meet new people and get more involved. The reason behind my low grades before was lack of studying and study habits. This changed dramatically this year, where i began studying everyday even if it was just going over past lectures that I have already reviewed, which helped very much.
Another plan I will carry out to ensure success is to find ways to relieve stress during exam period. I work myself up too much about the marks I¿¿m going to achieve on exams, which overall hurts my grades. I will seek stress relieving workshops or events to help me during my study breaks.
To focus more on my studies I will be removing myself from the workplace where I have worked before to also concentrate more on my studies as I feel the most important thing in my life right now is being able to continue to study at Queen¿¿s and achieve my degree.
