Petition Letter: To whom it may concern-
My name is Gabi Sandler and I am going into my fourth year of a Drama/Psychology medial program.
This past year (2015/2016), I took DRAM300, a required course for Drama majors and medials taught by Dr. Natalie Rewa. Although I loved the course, Dr. Rewa's style was found to be difficult to many of the students and the instructions were not always clear. After our first major paper, the class average was incredibly low and we notified the department of our concerns. I thought that I understood her methods and her instructions clearly, so I never sought out any one-on-one help. In the second semester, I made more time to speak with her for clarification to make sure we were on the same page. For our final paper, I went into her office hours for about 45 minutes to discuss my ideas. She was impressed with my level of work and helped formulate a direction for my thesis. I asked if I had interpreted the instructions properly and if it was OK that I drew my own conclusions. She said not only was it OK, but encouraged. I felt very confident in my paper, only to become disheartened with my low mark. When I asked why, she said, My remarks regarding your assignment are that you did not complete the assignment as assigned. She also explained that it was evident from my paper that I didn't work with my group when I was the only one present for all classes in the assignment.
Despite the fact that I reached out, I didn't hear back. Frustrated, I went to the department director, Craig Walker. After not hearing from him for about 2 weeks, I messaged Lee Atkinson in administration, who must have asked Craig because he instantly replied and sent me the link for the appeal. Had I known about this appeal process, I would have begun it earlier, but because neither of them replied, I was ignorant to the fact that this had to be done. Within the Drama department, we have been encouraged to stay within the department. I know that it is past the 21 days since the mark was received, but I did still make an effort (I have proof of the e-mails) and have the proof of the work that I did one-on-one with Dr. Rewa and the manifestation of those clear notes into my paper.
Please let me know what the next step (if any) is in this process.
