Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (studies),

I would like to request an appeal of my grade listed below:
PHGY 214: C-

In addition, I would like to request an appeal to appeal past the deadline for the PHGY 214 course

The reason I did not appeal this course by the deadline is because I was unaware it was permissible to appeal a grade until now. Also, during the appeal time period I was finding it difficult to manage my depression and anxiety.

I am requesting an appeal because I was suffering from generalized depressive disorder and anxiety. I have been on the medication Cipralex, from the beginning of September 2015 until the end of June 2016. This medication appeared to be ineffective as I continued to suffer from depression and anxiety during my entire school year. This medication also gave me many adverse side effects, such as insomnia, constant anxiety, exhaustion and an impeding lack of motivation.

These side effects, in addition to depression and anxiety decreased my desire to socialize and leave my home. Thankfully I was able to manage the workload of my other courses due to the balanced grading system and supplementary opportunities for marks aside from exams. Unfortunately for PHGY 214, the workload was more demanding and grading only through examination I was able to obtain the mark of a C- with the support of friends. Overall my GPA significantly declined from first year as a result of these difficulties I was suffering throughout second year.

Living on campus throughout the year, I am located a great distance from home and was unable to have regular communication with my doctor. The clinic doctors did not want to alter my prescription which prolonged the symptoms through to the end of the appeal period. Returning home at the end of the year I was able to discuss with my doctor to determine a new approach for my health. She recommended new medication and incorporating a pet into my life as a means of emotional support and help with my mental health. I have since gotten a cat which has helped to reduce my anxiety and depression substantially.

The reason I am only appealing this individual course is that I managed to maintain my remaining grades above a C average as those classes required a lesser workload and I had more support from friends in order to accomplish what I needed to get above a C.
I currently have an emotional support cat that is living with me, and has already significantly decreased my anxiety levels and has helped me to manage my depression even with studying for the MCAT this summer. I feel stronger and more positive going forward, with my own apartment off campus.
Thank you, I appreciate your consideration for the appeal of this course.
