Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

My first year at Queen¿¿s was very difficult. I found the adjustment to University academics very strenuous and as result I did not produce proper marks, placing me on academic probation. After finishing the year, I began to wonder if my difficulties at school had anything to do with a learning disability. I then took the time to get properly tested at the Southfield Center for Development in Darien, CT. The results of the tests concluded Attention Deficit Disorder and Executive Functioning issues. The combination of sustained attention, working memory, and executive skills deficits created a very challenging internal learning environment for my first year. I did not receive the results of the test until the beginning of September 2015. Therefore, I could not make any appeals prior because I was not aware of these issues. With the help of medication and academic accommodations, my second year at Queen¿¿s was much more successful. I thought if I worked hard the marks from first year would not matter. However, these marks tremendously affect my cumulative GPA. I met with an academic advisor late in second semester that informed me I could appeal these marks for standing credit. Standing Credit would be tremendously helpful to me because it would remove the lower marks from my GPA, removing me from academic probation and allowing my marks from second year to be emphasized.
