I am writing to request to waive the 21-day deadline for the winter semester of 2015 to submit an appeal for CR status in two courses. The rationale for this request is due to extenuating medical circumstances and that I was not aware of the options that are available when a student experiences medical difficulties impacting academic performance.
It wasn't until my second year of study that I sought out medical support from Health Counselling and Disability services in October of 2015. This was a difficult decision to make as I am not the type of person to willingly seek out help, as I felt it was my responsibility to address my health and at that time, I was simply trying to make sure I was successful in my academic program. Early in the winter term of 2015, I had no idea of what the future would hold in regard to my health and ultimately my marks. As I did not fail any courses, I was simply grateful to have finished first year. I had no idea that I could have prevailed upon the appeal system to take action in regard to the marks that were impacted by my illness.
After the most recent recovery of a major depressive episode (spring 2016), I have been on an intensive course of recovery involving medication and therapy, which has allowed me to access resources within the school that further benefit my academic output, as well as my ability to cope with the demands that the academic environment places on me. It was not until June 2016, that I was even aware that appealing grades on my transcript for a CR standing was a possibility. Up until now, I have unfortunately had to face the academic consequences of my medical circumstances, which brings disappointment and discouragement to both my academic enthusiasm and motivation.
When I sought the assistance of the Office of the University Ombudsman in preparing my appeal submission, and was explaining my medical background, I was told that if courses from my first year were impacted, I should appeal the 21-day deadline to be waived for credit standing in PHYS117 and PSYC100 in winter semester of 2015. Although this is a separate appeal, it is only separate because I was asked, by Spring Forsberg, to file an additional appeal for this time period separate from my current appeal for a CR status in a course taken in winter 2016. The formal diagnosis of my ongoing medical circumstance is Major Depressive Episode and Anxiety Disorder, and was made in December 2015.
I hope this explains why I did not appeal after first year, and why I felt it was important to address this matter now that I am aware of the impact of my medical circumstances on my academic progress. As I have explained in my other appeal, I do have an extensive support network in place and I do not anticipate that this will continue to impact my performance going forward.
