Petition Letter: I am writing this letter of appeal due to psychological disorders and challenges that have greatly impacted my grades negatively the last school year. I am looking to request a credit standing (CR) in courses in order to help my academic standings.
During the last half/semester of my senior year in high school (grade 12) I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and ADD (Attention deficit disorder). Due to this I was constantly tired, lack of energy, fluctuating between insomnia (unable to sleep) or hypersomnia (sleeping too much), even small tasks take extra effort. There was continual stress on me due to school/grades and family issues. When hit with a depression episode I lose the will to do everything, it also gives me feelings of sadness, emptiness or hopelessness, worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures and loss of interest or pleasure in most things that I used to once enjoy. Needless to say these factors not only affected everyday life but school as well. Depression also greatly impacted my health and I had trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things, which mainly applied to schoolwork.
My past year in school, I overcame many of my mental illness challenges and managed to do fairly well in most of my courses with the exception of both of my first year Biology courses (Bio 102 and 103). These courses took a tremendous strain on me as I was not familiar with the material and struggled greatly with the lab works. For the course I did try my best to seek help from the TA's, the prof and even held study sessions with my peers but I could not keep up. However, the main reason for my poor score on both of the courses was due to unfortunate timing of my depression episodes, happened to land around the dates of my biology final exams, as both of them were my last exam of the semester and the stress of it caught up to me. I am aware that the appeal Bio 102 is past the date as it was from fall semester. The only reason I did not think to appeal earlier was due to the fact that I was hoping to major in the Biology-Psychology specialization, I later realized that it was not likely but I didn't want to give up until the end. Sadly because of the way depression works, the more difficult something was the more I couldn't stand the thought of bring myself to do it, surrounded by the feelings of hopelessness. The past year I was really stressed and struggled with choosing a major after doing lots of research, meeting up with both the career counselor and my academic advisor. I decided to take a medial in art history and psychology, which were both courses that I enjoyed. I am worried that the grades received from the bio courses due to my challenges will affect my future grade standing. I will continue to improve and surpass my depression's impact on school epically now that I have found a path to follow.
The metal illnesses which hindered my potential and my performance in school was beyond my control, they have directly affected my academic performance. I would like to be granted credit standing (CR) in the courses in order to reflect my actual abilities and not be viewed by the results affected due to my mental health. I appreciate the time that you have taken to read my appeal.
