Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

My name is Hannah Huscroft and I am appealing three failed courses from my last term (Winter 2016). I met with an academic advisor today to discuss classes for this current semester and she had noticed that I failed to complete three courses. I had tried to put this out of my mind because I had felt and still do feel ashamed of my poor performance last semester. I had not considered the appeal process before because I believed it was too late, however, she was able to give me the information on the appeal process and encouraged me that it might still be possible to salvage my GPA in my last year.

Last semester I should have dropped these three courses because I was not mentally well enough to attend classes. I had recently been though some domestic issues with my boyfriend earlier in the year which caused my mental wellness to deteriorate further than it already had. I had expressed to my parents that I wanted to take the semester off and return back in the fall if that was an option. However, they were not supportive of this idea and forced me to stay in Kingston to tough it out. I had trouble doing this because I gave up going to classes and had completely shut down. Like I mentioned previously, I was ashamed of myself for giving up and was scared of how my family would react if they had known I stopped going to the classes which they pay a fortune for. I dealt with my emotions and mental wellness on my own which, looking back, was not the right way to deal with it.

I have never been the strongest in my classes, but I come from a very academic family and I have always felt pressure to be the best and to stay here at Queen's to finish in honours. I believe that if I am granted this appeal I will be able to make the most of a three year degree and finish strongly here at Queen's. I sought counselling this summer in my hometown of London so that I could return to school as a stronger student. I have worked throughout university at four different jobs. This year I plan on not working in order to focus all of my time completely on school. In previous years, I was trying to properly budget my money to support living on my own and became overwhelmed between working a night job and taking on early classes. I have also received information from the academic advisor on where to go for help if something like this comes up again during my time at Queen's. I now know that these resources are available to me and I believe that if given the opportunity, I will be able to make the most of my last year in Kingston.

Thank you for your consideration,

Hannah Huscroft
