Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I am writing to appeal my failing grade in ENGL100 from the 2015/2016 academic year and have it changed to a CR standing due to extenuating circumstances. From the 11th of February to approximately the 4th of March, my great-grandmother, who was 96 at the time, was in the hospital at first with a broken hip and shoulder, and was later kept because she wasn¿¿t waking up from the operation done on her hip. When she woke from that, she was moved to the intensive care unit due to pneumonia and a collapsed lung. It was a very difficult time for my entire family, and for quite a while the doctors were saying that she would not get better and that we should take her out of the hospital to let her die at home in peace. I spent every day at the hospital with her, except for one day in which there was a snowstorm and I was snowed in (the 16th of February), forgoing classes because (I apologize for what I¿¿m about to say because I know this is a learning institute and I¿¿m paying to be here) family is more important than any level of schooling. There were nights where I¿¿d stayed in the ICU with my great-grandmother to ensure she lived through the night.

On top of that, I¿¿d ended up exhausting myself so much from caring for my Nan that by the time she¿¿d gotten out of the hospital (we¿¿re very lucky, she just had her 97th birthday about a week ago, which is even more amazing considering 7 months ago she was flatlining and all of this was happening), I¿¿d come down with an awful case of stomach flu which left me in bed for a week. If it¿¿s up to me and there¿¿s no family emergency going on, I won¿¿t miss a class, but I was so violently ill that my mother refused to allow me to go to classes that week. That was approximately March 9th.

Thank you for considering my appeal,

Samantha Quinn
