Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop BIOL 103 (Fall, 2016). It is an online class that I chose as an elective during open enrolment, and unfortunately I can not keep up with it.
This semester I have been diagnosed with a mental illness, Borderline Personality Disorder, at a mental health assessment at the LaSalle building. The impact of the diagnosis and my overall mental health state has made it quite difficult for me to keep up with my academics. As a result of my diagnosis I have dedicated several hours a week to taking care of my mental health with therapy, and accessing programs to assist me. This has been quite emotionally strenuous and it has been very difficult for me to focus on my academics, as my mental health has been so poor. This has been difficult to go through being far away from my family and have taken time off school to visit them, as they have been quite concerned for my health as the situation was quite serious. I did not drop this class before the last date to drop it on solus as I was feeling like I was managing my academics sufficiently and my mental health was slightly better around that point, but shortly after my mental health became quite poor again. I am confident that I will be able to handle my other courses for this semester as I am comfortable with the material for them and have been in touch with my professors who have been understanding with extensions.
I am planning to take a lighter course load in the future as I have realized that it has been too difficult to balance my work load with taking care of my mental health. I am an upper year arts student and chose to take this course as an elective this semester, and have realized that it was too difficult as I am not familiar with the science stream. I have decided to not take courses outside of the arts stream as that was poorly planned for me to take a biology course with no intention on pursuing a career in that field. Since I will be taking a lighter course load in the future, I know it may take longer than four years for me to complete my undergraduate degree, which is fine with me. I will be continuing to consult with my doctors and counsellors, as well as an academic advisor to assist me.
Sincerely,
Zoe Barclay-Wright
