Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To whom this may concern;
Good Afternoon, I am Alexandria Joknic a student going into third year at Queens University. I am currently enrolled in the bachelor of science honors program. I chose to enroll myself in chemistry 281 for the summer term May-July. I found chem 281 very interesting and I was able to get 80 or higher on every assignment up until the middle of June, when my family issues began to escalate and affect my day to day life. I then was not able to fully study for the exam or complete small assignments that came after this date. Unfortunately, I was unable to do my best for chem 281 . Recently (starting in June) I have been very stressed as a result of taking care of my grandfather who as Alzheimer¿¿s as well as colon cancer. My grandmother is unable to care for him on her own and so requires my help, resulting in less time spent on my studies. Also, I have an alcoholic mother with severe depression who has required multiple hospital visits as well as transportation to and from work (occurring since May). Lastly my father unexpectedly has chosen to be out of my life for the last few months adding to my anxiety. Therefore, I have been unable to put 100 into my classes and have been under high stress having to deal with a number of family issues. I have been consulting with a family physician as well as a psychiatrist to learn how to deal with this stress. I have been seeing the psychiatrist since July 2nd, 2014 and am finding their advice very helpful but I am still unable to avoid the task of taking care of my family, and am obligated to do so at this point in time.
Fortunately I am returning to Queens University for my third year of biology in September, where I will be able to focus solely on my course and not on these family issues that I am surrounded with. I thought I could complete these courses under this severe stress but I was wrong and so have received a failing grade in chem 281. I am asking for my circumstances to be considered when reviewing this appeal, because I am a very dedicated student who puts a lot of effort into my schooling and this fail I have received is really affecting my confidence because I know that if it weren¿¿t for my family issues I would have completed this coursewith a great grade and confidence. Thank you for your time.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Though I have chosen to write an appeal to remove my grade from Chem 281, I do have a plan to complete this course come September 2014. I have found it extremely difficult to complete this online course during the 2014 summer term as a result of family issues that have arisen, but I do plan on completing this course in September which I have already enrolled in. In order to manage my stress and anxiety I have looked for guidance from a psychiatrist and a family physician. They have both given me amazing advise as well as techniques to deal with these barriers in my day to day life. I am still seeing my psychiatrist whom I started visiting in June, and will continue to see and speak to someone at Queens University in the fall of September. I am capable of completing these courses, and to do so I must remove myself from the stresses around me which are predominately my family issues. I will be doing this my moving back to Kingston to complete my third year of Biology at Queens. This way I can focus mainly on my classes and not have to deal with outside stress. Thank you once again for your understanding and consideration.
