Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard, Associate Dean (Studies), and whom it may concern,

My name is Cleodie Collison, student number 10198085, and I am appealing to drop Biology 102 (Fall 2016).

Two weeks ago I found out that my grandpa has prostate cancer, and would have to go into surgery to prevent it from spreading. I have been extremely close with my grandpa since I was a little girl; so hearing this caused me a lot of emotional stress. I stopped sleeping well, waking up every few hours and having many stress dreams while asleep. Having this added stress and weight on my shoulders made it difficult for me to be attentive towards my studies at a time when all my classes were picking up with exams approaching. A few days after his procedure my grandpa had a stroke. I heard about this on Saturday, December 3rd. Since hearing this I have been deeply sad, stressed, unfocused and anxious. I have been unable to sleep, and have not been getting more than a couple hours a night. Trying to study has been so hard for me as my mind consistently drifts and I cannot seem to focus. I have not been able to put in the work necessary to do well on my exams, as I am very distracted and sleep deprived. Biology is an especially hard course for me and requires extra effort from my end to get the grades I want. So since hearing the news about my grandpa, it has been the course that has slipped the most. I want my grades to reflect my capabilities, and not be a reflection of what I am going through right now.

Although Biology is difficult for me, I find it extremely interesting and plan to take it again next year. When I do take it, I want to be in a strong mental and emotional place so I can focus my energy into my academics. I will also be going to a couple sessions with our family¿¿s counselor while home for Christmas break, so in the case of something like this happening again I will be better prepared to deal with my grief and stress.

I am looking forward to coming back in the New Year, refreshed and ready to start with a clean slate.

Thank you for your consideration,
Cleodie
