Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

Due to an extenuating circumstances regarding an on going medical condition I am writing to appeal the dropping of the course Econ 250, without receiving academic penalty.

I have been seeing Dr. Whelihinda on campus since September 22, 2016 and after a thorough discussion we decided it was in my best interest to drop Econ 250. This September I under went testing at the Regional Assessment And Resource Centre at Queens to determine if I had ADHD. Late September I received results saying I have ADHD and an minor learning disability towards math. I took steps with my psychologist to learn how to now cope with my ADHD and long term anxiety, which I have been seeing a therapist for since grade 9. I attempted to make an appointment to get a new accommodation in place with this new information but was told by accessibility to wait until next semester. I also was in the process of changing anxiety medication, thus making me more anxious than usual. Around midterms I was prescribed medication for ADHD. As you maybe aware medication does not fix these issue entirely. As such it was difficult to find the right dose, and I needed to see the doctor weekly to increase the medication. This struggle was accompanied by the added pressure of not having my new accommodations in place.

Knowing about the learning disability in Math, I took steps and attempted to find a tutor to help me with ECON250. Since September I have been trying to find a tutor for stats, I started with contacting master students who were already tutoring too many students and could not take on another. I tried peer tutors and out of Queens sources but none were qualified nor capable of helping me. For instance one tutor from Queens I met with told me she would be able to help me study for my stats midterm but when we met she was unable to answer any of my questions and our hour became 20 minutes. This was frustrating as I already had a lot on my plate and finding a tutor shouldn¿¿t have had to be another stressful situation.¿

My mother contacted the director of Student Wellness on October 21st and was able to get me a new accessibility advisor, unfortunately by the time my new accommodation was put in place it was too late to be effective in aiding me in my academics this semester. I ended up failing both of my Econ 250 stats exams which I put my best effort into under the circumstances and I am left overwhelmed. I am trying to learn to work with my new disability but I have only really started to gain more control.

Given that ECON250 is a required course for my major, I plan to enrol in this class in the winter term and am very hopeful that I will successfully complete this course once I have adjusted to my new situation.
