Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies,
This letter is to appeal to receive credit standing in Phys 216 (F13) and a late drop of Phys 206 (W14) due to extenuating circumstances. The documentation from my appeal to the Board of Studies and the first appeal from 2014 will be referenced in this letter.
During my first two years at Queen's I was struggling to succeed in math and physics while having a very difficult time with varsity sports and coming to terms with the death of my cousin.
All the above was covered in more detail in my previous appeal from 2014 and from the Board of Studies meeting. However, as a quick summary, I had been dealing with the death of my cousin and being cut from the football team (which was my only emotional support at the time). These two events as well as being unaware of my precarious situation with my GPA (due to lack of communication on the universities part) lead me to make bad choices in which courses I would take in second year. These events ultimately set me up for failure that was beyond my control.
Next I wish to discuss something from the Board of Studies meeting, Dr. Benard stated my grades would have been evaluated and she determined that my grades did not need to be changed. Revising the grades would have been of minimal impact to the University, however, for my peace of mind and to mitigate stress going forward, it would have been a significant impact during the recovery process. I had sufficient extenuating circumstances to waive the requirement to withdraw and it would follow that those same circumstances impacted my academic performance. With my academic performance impacted I should be eligible to receive credit standing and a late drop on these courses.
I wish to address these grades because they will not affect me in graduating as they are not a part of my degree plan. These were also the courses that would have been evaluated at the time of my 2014 appeal by Dr.Benard. These are the courses that had I known I was in poor standing I would have never attempted and would have taken other action to recover my positive standing.
Having recovered, my grades demonstrate that I am academically solid when not dealing with extenuating circumstances. I would appreciate your review of the documents attached and a favorable consideration of the request.
