Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing this letter to ask for permission to drop the course GNDS 311 Feminist Thought, held within the fall semester of the 2016 academic year.
This past fall semester I have suffered from personal events beyond my control which have directly affected my academic performance. After meeting with a Student Wellness Services professional and Gender Studies Undergraduate Chair/ Professor, I have come to terms with my social anxiety which has posed as a psychological challenge in completing GNDS 311 (Feminist Thought) in the Fall 2016 semester. I have been dealing with the effects of social anxiety my whole life, however it is not until this semester that it has affected my ability to function and complete school work to such a great degree. My anxiety has directly affected my ability to perform in class. This course specifically is composed of group work and discussion periods that are essential components in order to pass. However, with the thought of doing these types of activities, my social anxiety has made me unable to academically perform the required course tasks. My anxiety has made me unable to leave my house due to the fear of being called upon by the instructor to answer a question as well as fearing working in groups. I also do not usually ask for help in the classroom setting, out of fear of embarrassment and try to remain unnoticed or invisible by others in the classroom. My social anxiety has made me unable to carry out the expected goals and tasks of group work and participation outlined by the course instructor. I had dropped my other courses and hoped I would be able to continue and finish this class as it is essential for my degree and why I did not drop it by the required date. However, my anxiety had become unmanageable and it was too late to succeed in the course. Along with my letter of appeal, there is a letter from a health care professional stating that my anxiety was beyond my control and psychologically had a direct impact on my academic performance. I am a fourth year student and cannot afford to get a failure on my transcript, for I am planning to further my education by applying for a Master's Degree in the future. I have worked hard during my studies at the University and plan to return in Fall 2017 to complete my undergraduate degree by retaking the course in the following year. Also, to aid my mental health I have decided to take a lighter course load for the Winter 2017 semester. Furthermore, I have been performing exercises to make my anxiety manageable. I will be happy to answer any questions. Thank you for taking time to review my request.
Sincerely,
Emily Sellner
