Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom this best concerns,

The main purpose of the initial appeal was to waive my failing grades for the summer 2016 courses WRIT 240 and FILM 395 (internship). The reasons for that appeal are along very similar lines to why I am now making this appeal--to waive the deadline that I missed to submit it originally. So while the purpose of this letter is to explain what inhibited me from specifically submitting that first appeal before the deadline, the reality is that the reasoning is near-identical, just to slightly varying degrees.

As Queen's Faculty of Arts & Sciences is by this point no stranger to knowing, I am a long-term and treatment-resistant sufferer of major depressive disorder. While this state has remained fairly steady for at least five years, the severity of things does tend to ebb and flow, ranging from severely-hindered but fairly functioning to near-totally incapacitated. Some time during the summer, the latter became my reality once more, as is corroborated in my documentation. By the time I was able to get an appointment with my doctor for the documentation, my symptoms had worsened still. From here forward (roughly mid-late September) things got increasingly worse. Regardless, I had been doing what I could to at least get functional again, including participating in an experimental clinical trial for treating of depression (to no avail) as well as being followed by the psychiatrist the charge of said study.

The most recent update, including why I am now able to being sending this letter is that he has put me on a brand new type of medication which certainly seems to be having at least some effect. This is the first type of somewhat significant relief I've received in years.

I do hope this explains everything adequately. If any further documentation is needed, including a corroborating prescription record (showing the new antidepressant, mirtazapine), I'd be happy to provide it.
