Petition Letter: To Whom it May Concern,
I am appealing to drop CHEM 281 due to unforeseen circumstances this past semester. Upon returning home for Thanksgiving weekend (October 10th, 2016) I was made aware that my grandfather had fallen extremely ill. Having grown up across the street from my grandparents, they played a large role in my life and I am very close to them. This news was shock to me and my Mom told me that she hadn't wanted it to disrupt my studies. After this weekend, the rest of my semester became a series of visits home almost every weekend and a lot of heavy stress and emotional burden. I am co-president of Relay For Life and had to severely decrease my involvement with the committee along with my other volunteer positions. The rest of my grades did suffer but not as much as my Organic Chemistry course due to the complex nature of the material. This is evident as seen in my first midterm grade (80) which I wrote prior to learning my grandfather was sick I then failed my second midterm and the final. This course severely hinders my graduate school applications and because I am in fourth year I am unable to retake it this semester in class or online. It was a core course for my minor of Life Sciences which I will also need to drop in order to graduate in the spring. My grandfather is now doing better and is back at home, which is why I have returned to school for this semester rather than take a term off. It is my hope that he continues his recovery and that his health no longer negatively affects my performance.
Thank you for taking the time to review my appeal, please do not hesitate to contact me should you need any other information.
Sincerely,
Brianna Poirier
