Petition Letter: The continuation of my extenuating circumstance caused me to live in a sort of bubble where I was unable to attend lectures and focus and attain the marks that I could have in many of my courses. I was in a very toxic environment without really knowing it until I was physically and mentally hurt. This started mainly in the second half of my first term of my first year at Queen's. I tried my best to manage and handle things on my own and to take control but I was unable to do that. The whole process to appeal and the student services and counselling weren't something that I knew of then and after quite some time I finally made an appointment to ask what my options were. Although a bit late, it wasn't until I realized that I really needed help in order to succeed that I had even thought of going to a counsellor and seeing a student advisor.
I wish to appeal the lateness of my appeal for my grades past just the fall term of 2016; if that is granted I wish to drop the failed mark in Math 121 during my first year and my summer term (although I am retaking that course now and seeing that I am doing much better I may not need to drop the previous mark) as well as Geology 107 and to have credit standings for my marks in Geography 102 as well as Astronomy 101. I've gone to seek out help with my mental health and I've surrounded myself with peers who wish only the best for me. I have also gone to a tutoring session and created a planner to work towards a better math mark and I believe the that amount of focus I tried to put towards my main courses like biology and chemistry in first year really took away from my electives; geology, geography and astronomy. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to make the rest of my undergraduate studies better without the weight of the circumstances from my first year and summer term. Something that I am currently and continuously learning is that I'm not alone and if I need help I shouldn't be afraid to ask for it because I'm not superwoman and I don't know all the answers. Thank you for taking your time to review my appeal applications
Sincerely,
April Ye

Petition Letter: To whom it concerns,
After 4 months of clear thinking and change in my life, I've started to approach the way I study and the way I see the academic world. I've filled my room with month calendars and planners to all help improve and motivate my studies. I've had the honour of meeting many friends who have given me insight in to how they study and have helped me figure out what way I study best. If I could go back and change one thing, it would to have learned to step away from my situation sooner. I realize now it's later than most hope to get their life together but later is better than never In the past couple of months, I have learned a great deal from being on my own and working through my decisions with my counsellor.
The timeline of my circumstance starts midway through the start of my first year and continues through the summer until the end of my first semester of my second year. This was when I had the courage to step away and look for help with my circle of supportive friends. I also have very supportive parents who are incredible and understanding and I would not be here standing on two feet still wanting to continue forward. Moving forward, I'll be choosing courses with serious consideration as well as taking my MCATs this summer to see if I have what it takes to continue down this path. I will be trying very hard to not let the past affect my future because I don't know if I can be taken down again and have the energy to work back up.
With my appeal for the 21 day deadline being granted, I wish to appeal to drop my mark in Geology 107 (from my first year) and to have credit standing in Math 121 (after I took it during my first year and my summer term and my second year first semester, I was finally able to pass but with a low grade) as well as credit standing for my marks in Geography 102 and Astronomy 101 (during my first year and summer term). I've gone to seek out help with my mental health and I've surrounded myself with peers who wish only the best for me. I have also gone to a tutoring session, course crams and watched online course videos. On top of everything, I've multiple planners for school work and volunteering. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to make the rest of my undergraduate studies better without the weight of the circumstances from my first year, summer term and second year first semester. Thank you for taking your time to review my appeal applications
