Please accept this appeal to add PSYC 570 Special Directed Lab to my timetable following the add/drop deadline.
I am appealing this primarily because of the timing in setting up this course with Dr. Jordan Poppenk, who will be acting as my supervisor and instructor should this appeal be granted. The application and interview process to join Dr. Poppenk's lab as a Directed Undergraduate student began past the first day of classes in the Winter 2017 term. Following this, beginning the directed lab involved drafting an acceptable agreement between myself and Dr. Poppenk in order to determine how I should be evaluated for my contribution to the lab. As Dr. Poppenk also took on two other directed lab students, this process took longer than expected and an agreement was not decided on until past the add/drop deadline.
Taking on a directed lab involved making several quick decisions regarding my academic schedule and personal schedule. This included dropping PSYC 251 (Developmental Psychology) in order to free up space on my timetable, adjust professional commitments such as meetings in my Residence Don career to ensure that I would have time to work as a directed lab student, and redefining the path I wish to take within my psychology career from clinical research to cognitive neuroscience. To me, this has been a great deal of turnaround to compensate for a course I have been certain will be added to my schedule since the end of the first week of classes.
To compensate for the late addition, I have written an academic plan to be found with this appeal. In short, I have already been working with Dr. Poppenk and his lab since the outset of week 2, and intend to assist in other areas of lab work to make up for time that may have been lost in earlier to weeks. This will ensure that the work I put in is consistent with academic standards at Queen's University. This is discussed in more detail through my academic plan.

Academic Plan: The following is a summary of my academic plan should I be allowed to add PSYC 570 past the add/drop deadline:
The focus of my studies is to develop research skills through working on a high-level collaboration with faculty and other students at various stages of their academic careers.
I am a full-time undergraduate psychology major. This concentration in and of itself demands lots of self-learning and commitment to class time. Taking PSYC 570, though by no means a required step, is a course that will give me adequate exposure to the research setting in pursuit of an undergraduate thesis (PSYC 501). I have worked hard to place myself at an academic standing where working as a directed student in a lab is possible, and have demonstrated the commitment necessary to be successful in this regard
I have been working with Dr. Poppenk and his lab since the outset of week two of this winter 2017 term. This was well before the add/drop deadline, and I have already been working with the lab on literature review and development of a project. As such, I will not have very much material to catch up on since I am already actively engaging with the lab and its functions. In my short time with Dr. Poppenk thus far, I have found his work nothing short of fascinating. Reading academic journal articles regarding what is known about medial temporal lobes, the hippocampus, and their subregions and functions has been pleasurable and despite the high level of content, I am finding reading through them to be quite simple. I expect myself to have great success in this role as a result of my interest in the material.
Nonetheless, I understand that adding a course past the add/drop deadline will need to involve some extra dedication to success on my part. It is my intention to ensure that all material given to me by Dr. Poppenk or any other supervising lab member is completed in a timely manner. Further, I will also be dedicating an extra two hours per week assisting other lab members on various projects. One of these involves the development of questions to test memory for emotionally significant experiences, another aspect of the project at large that I am working on. Furthermore, I will take care to ensure that my other academic courses, of which I am taking four, will not falter as a result of lab commitment. This will mean spending a few weeks with reduced co-curricular activity in order to ensure that I am maintaining a high level of academic achievement.
I believe that upon revisiting of this plan, I will have found myself successful in my course having followed my commitment to achievement closely.
